Anthem for Doomed Youth
What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries for them;no prayers nor bells,
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs, ——
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.
What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys, but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of goodbyes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.
When I have fears
When I have fears that I may cease to be
Before my pen has glean'd my teeming brain,
Before high-piled books, in charactery,
Hold like rich garners the full ripen'd grain;
象丰富的谷仓,把熟谷子收好;
When I behold, upon the night's starr'd face,
Huge cloudy symbols of a high romance,
And think that I may never live to trace
Their shadows, with the magic hand of chance;
以偶然的神笔描出它的幻相;
And when I feel, fair creature of an hour,
That I shall never look upon thee more,
Never have relish in the faery power
Of unreflecting love;--then on the shore
Of the wide world I stand alone, and think
Till love and fame to nothingness do sink.
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometimes too hot the eys of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimmed;
他那金彩的脸色也会被遮暗;
And every fair from fair somethme declines,
By chance, or nature's changing course, untrimmed:
被时机或者自然的代谢所摧残;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
你永远不会失去你美的仪态;
Nor shall Death brag thou wanderest in his shade
When in eternal lines to time thou growest.
你将在不朽的诗中与时间同在;
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
composed in the desert
cen shen
journeying west on horseback and almost reaching the sky,
since leaving home, twice have i seem the full moon.
dusk falling, still no idea where to put up for the night,
level sands boundless with ne'er a sign of smoke or man.
encounter with envoy gone back to the capital
cen shen
gazing east at home, endless the road stretches far away.
my sleeves wet with tears that never seemed to dry.
encounter on horsebacks, no paper or brushes around,
so i rely on you to pass the word that i'm safe and sound.
my fancy—to the tune of xijiangyue
xin qiji
in my drunkenness, isn't it time
for merry-making.
anyway, i'm too busy, for the moment,
to worry about career, or
country!
only recently have i come to realize
those books by those ancient masters
can lead one, to nowhere!
last night, after so many cups
i collapsed by a pine tree.
"how do you like it this way?"
i asked the tree.
alas, he seemed to stoop to help me.
no—i gave him a shove—
"go away!"
anchoring at guazhou
wang anshi
beyond the river lies jingkou, from which zhongshan
is but a span of several mountains away.
now that the spring breezes have reverdur'd the south bank,
when will the bright moon see me on my homebound way?
reading the chronicle of shu
for a thousand years the world has fought
over things as trivial as a feather—
what a pity!—
squandering lives for nothing.
why has nobody told that liu the truth:
his bet is to purchase some land,
and to farm
an easy living in the country?
Let Us Have Faith
Security is mostly a superstition.
It does not exist in nature,
nor do the children of men
as a whole experience it.
Avoiding danger is no safer
in the long run than outright exposure.
Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing.
To keep our faces toward change and
behave like free spirits
in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.
To the Virgins, To Make Much of Time
Gather ye rosebuds while you may,
Old time still a-flying;
往昔如风恐难追;
And this same flower that smiles today,
To-morrow will be dying.
The glorious lamp of heaven, the sun,
The higher he's a-getting;
载光载热朝天腾;
The sooner will his race be run,
And nearer he's to setting.
That age is best which is the first,
When youth and blood are warmer;
精力充沛血仍稠;
But being spent, the worse, and worst,
Times still succeed the former.
Then be not coy, but use your time,
And while ye may, go marry;
For having lost but once your prime,
You may for ever tarry.
