One of the surprising things foreigners experience in Korean is being touched or bumped(撞)in crowded places. Most Koreans don’t care about touching or bumping into strangers on the street. Some foreigners complain about this. Why don’t Koreans say “Sorry,” or “Excuse me,” when they touch or bump others?

One main reason is the Korean history of living as one race without mixing with others. Therefore, the presence of strangers on the street is quite a recent occurrence. Another reason is that Korean, due to the rapid growth, has become one of the busiest countries in the world. If Koreans said, “Sorry,” whenever they touched others, it would be necessary to say it dozens of times a day.

In addition, Koreans have been accustomed to this “touch culture” since childhood. Kids always walk hand in hand with their parents, and arm in arm with close friends. Also, many Korean women hold hands or link arms when they walk with their female friends. Dancing with the same sex is very normal in Korean, too. Westerners may find such physical contact very curious and even wonder their relationship. Of course they are not lovers!

The Korean language also stresses the importance of the idea of “oneness”. Unlike westerners who frequently

use “I”, Koreans always use “we” or “our” while talking, such as “our mom”, “our school”, “our house”, etc. This custom also comes from the one-race idea, and helps explain why Koreans are comfortable with closeness and touch.

24. Why do some foreigners complain?

A. Korean people often dance with the same sex. B. Korean people always use “our” instead of “my”. C. Korean people walk hand in hand with their friends. D. Korean people don’t say “sorry” when they knock into them.

25. How does a foreigner feel when he notices Koreans’ frequent physical contact? A. Upset.

B. Familiar.

C. Confused.

D. Worried.

26. What is the custom of using “we” rather than “I” based on? A. Loving peace.

B. Family harmony. D. Respecting others.

C. The one-race idea.

27. What can be the suitable title for the text? A. Korean Touch Culture C. Korean Lifestyles

B. Korean Socializing D. Koreans’ being aggressive C

Xander Rose’s ride to elementary school on Wednesday morning promises to be a journey to remember. Hundreds of local bikers were due to accompany the 10-year-old motorcycle enthusiast from Nova Scotia, Canada, right to the school’s front door. The motorcyclists say they’re doing it to send a message to the fourth-grader’s bullies(欺凌者): Don’t mess with Xander. He’s got our support.

The boy’s mom, Katie Laybolt, told CTV News this week that her son has been bullied in school for years. “It’s been terrible. He’s gotten jumped on in the bus, he’s had clothing ripped(撕裂)off his back, and he’s been told to go die in a hole,” she said.

In an effort to stop the bullying, Laybolt contacted Xander’s school, the Children’s Aid Society of Cape Breton and the parents of other students. But nothing has worked, she said.

So Laybolt reached out to Defenders of the Children for help. The group, which offers support to bullied children, responded and shared Xander’s story on social media. It asked motorcyclists in the local area if they would “give Xander a ride to school some time, in numbers, as a sign to kids and teachers that he’s much loved and has a very protective family on two wheels.”
