The total area covered by rainforests was once found to be 14% of the Earth's land surface. However, more than 50% of the original rainforest area is destroyed. At present, rainforests cover only 6% of the land area. Natural and human threats are responsible for this loss of rainforests. Some of the natural threats to rainforests are below:
One of the most destructive environmental threats to the rainforest is wildfire. Small fires destroy the ground covers and small plants. In the United States alone, rapidly spreading wildfire burns down more than 1 million acres of forest every year.
The rainforest vegetation requires water and other plant growth factors for their survival. Long dry often weakens the plants, making them susceptible_to diseases, pest and fire breakouts. Also typhoons and storms result in damage to the rainforest, which are beyond recovery.
Threats to the rainforest caused by human activities differ from natural threats. They cause complete damage to woodlands, in which case recovery is nearly impossible. In case of natural events, some parts of the forest ecosystem continue to work, which leads to slow recovery of lost habitats. Listed below are some human threats to the rainforest:
Every minute, thousands of forest trees are cut down for use in building houses
2
and furniture. So a large number of ancient forests in the world have been destroyed. Also the rise in population is linked with increased need for foods, which in turn, is related to deforestation for agricultural practices.
Air pollution and water pollution are causing damage to every habitat, including the rainforest. You might have heard of acid rain, which when falls on leaves and plant parts, causes burning signs.
The need for bamboos and trees in paper industry is another threat to the rainforest. Millions of plants are cut down to produce paper, so as to meet the growing demands of the public.
No doubt, some of the reasons for reducing rainforests cannot be avoided. But, there are many things every individual can do to help protect the rainforests, such as planting trees and reducing exploitation of forests. Introducing public awareness programs to educate people about the importance of this natural resource will surely help in conserving rainforests.
16.In Paragraph 1, the writer uses the decreasing percentage of rainforest cover to ________.
A.prove the environmental problem is more serious
B.show more rainforests are in danger across the earth C.lead in the topic of threats to rainforests
D.remind readers of the importance of conserving rainforests
17.The underlined part “susceptible_to” in Paragraph 3 can be replaced by ________.
A.less important to B.far away from C.resistant to D.easily affected by
18.How many natural threats to rainforests are mentioned in the passage? A.Two. B.Three. C.Four. D.Five.
19.Which of the following correctly describes the difference between natural and human threats?
A.The damage caused by human activities to woodlands is unlikely to recover. B.The damage caused by natural events to rainforests can recover completely. C.Habitats of forests damaged by natural events can recover slowly.
D.Human activities cause fewer threats to rainforests than natural events. 20.According to the passage, humans cause threats to rainforests by many means except by ________.
A.cutting down forest trees B.polluting the environment C.creating man-made acid rain

In the past, American families tended to be quite large. It is common that parents raise five or more children. Over the years, the size of the family has decreased.
3
One reason for this is an increase in the cost of living. On average, children attend schools for more years than they used to, making them financially dependent on their families longer. Moreover, children nowadays are better dressed and have more money to spend on entertainment. The parents usually take the responsibility for all the expenses. Meanwhile, families are less close than they used to be. More and more American mothers work away from home.
The break-up of the family occurs when the parents divorce. A lot of children in the U. S. live part of their young lives with only one parent. Broken families usually result in problems for children and parents alike. Children blame themselves when their parents separate. They grow up feeling unsettled as they are moved back and forth between parents. Usually one parent is responsible for raising the children. These single parents must care for the children's emotional and psychological needs while also supporting them financially. This is very demanding and leaves very little time for the parent's own personal interests. Single parents often marry other single parents. In this type of family, unrelated children are forced to develop brother or sister relationship.
The situations of many American families today are not good. However, recent signs indicate that things are getting better. The divorce rate is declining. The rate of childbirth is rising. Perhaps Americans have learned how important families are.

故选A。
cut back on“削减,缩减”,是固定短语。
7.A 根据短语“be absorbed in”可判断选A,此处为过去分词短语作后置定语。 the number of…
10.C cut down 砍倒/减缩(费用); cut off 切掉,割。
11.A grow to 增加到(同become);grow up 长大;grow into 变成。
12.B be responsible for doing sth.=take responsibility to do sth.
The boy was having an operation on the stomach and tears were flowing down his cheeks quietly.
14.C 考查句型“appreciate it+if从句”,其中it作形式宾语。
第一段陈述雨林覆盖率正在严重下降之后,立即引入“Natural and human threats are responsible for this loss of rainforests.”,由此可判断选C。
由第二、三段可知,文章提到的natural threats有:wildfire,long dry和typhoons and storms,故选B。
根据第四段“In case of natural events, some parts of the
