We live on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, where the weather is mild(温和的). The Canada geese know this place; so do the white swans and the ducks. In autumn, they come here for winter. Once or twice each year, snow and icy rain move into the area. When this happens, there is a freeze(冰冻)which hardens the water to ice.
One morning, a friend and I set the breakfast table beside a huge window, which overlooked the Tred Avon River. Suddenly she cried out, “There is a goose out there!” We saw a large Canada goose. It couldn’t move, with its wings folded tight to its sides, and its feet frozen to the ice.
Then in the sky, a line of swans appeared. They flew from the top of the sky downward and at last landed on the ice. As the swans gathered around the frozen goose, my friend stood up, with one unbelieving hand against her mouth. She feared that the poor goose might be attacked by those great swan bills(鸟嘴).
Unexpectedly, those bills began to work on the ice covering the goose. They went on for a long time. At last, the goose’s head lifted and its body pulled. Then the goose was free and standing on the ice, but it still couldn’t move its wings. Four of the swans came around it. Their powerful bills chipped off(啄掉)the ice from its feathers. Slowly, the goose opened its wings as far as they would go. Seeing that the goose could freely move its wings, the swans flew slowly into the sky.
This is a true story. Every time I think of it, I can’t help asking, “If so for birds, why not for man?”
