People have all kinds of excuses for not volunteering their time to charities. “I’m too busy.” “Gas is too expensive to drive anywhere. I don’t need to go.” “I’ll just send some money instead.”
You won’t hear any such things from Betty Lowe. As Great Britain’s oldest active volunteer, 100-year-old Lowe spends her days between volunteering at a charity WRS shop at a hospital in her native Salford, England, and helping out with Britain’s version of the Girl Guides—a group she’s been a member of for 89 years.
“I had great interest in the guide and I used to go camping and walking. I was a bit of an outdoor girl when I was younger,” Lowe said.
Lowe isn’t quite in shape for camping these days, but she still keeps busy with her volunteer activities. When she’s not volunteering with one of her favorite groups, she’s helping out friends and family, and is known as a best birthday cake cook.
Lowe just turned 100 years old on Monday, and more than 100 friends and family members showed up at her birthday party to wish her well. It sounds like this charitable woman was happy to blow out the candles with a smile. “I think it’s very good to be 100,” she said. “I’ve enjoyed all my life.” 28. “Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one something good will happen.”
After graduating from college in 1932, I decided to try for job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer(播音I took the bus to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station. But I was refused every time. In one studio, a nice small station that’ll give you a chance,” she said.
I returned home, Dixon in Illinois. While there were no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Smith Ward had opened a store and wanted a local sportsman to manage its sports department. Since I had played high school football in Dixon, I applied(申请). The job sounded just right for me. But I still failed in the interview. At that moment, mom’s words came to my mind “Everything happens for the best.” Dad offered me a car to look for a job. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport in Iowa. The program director, named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, I felt sad. I asked aloud, “How can a man become a sports announcer if he can’t get a job in a radio station?”
I was waiting for the lift when I heard MacArthur calling, “What did you say about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he made me stand before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. As a result, I did a wonderful job and was told to broadcast Saturday’s game!
On my way home, I thought of my mother’s words again “Everything happens for the best if you carry on. One day something good will happen.”

Can you understand this sentence? If you can’t, don’t feel too bad; neither could the middle school teacher in England who received this as homework. This is Netspeak the language of computerized communication found on Internet or cell phones. To new comers, it can look like a completely foreign language. So, what is the translation of the sentence above? My summer holidays were a complete waste of time. Before, we used to go to New York to see my brother, his girlfriend, and their three screaming kids face to face. I love New York. It’s great.
School teachers and parents say this new form of writing is harming the English language. Increasing spelling and grammatical mistakes can be seen in students’ writing. They fear the language could become corrupted(面目全非的).
“Everyone should just relax”, say linguists(语言学家). They believe Netspeak is in fact more of a good thing. David Crystal, from the University of Wales, argues that Netspeak and Internet create a new language use and the almost lost art of diary writing, has been picked up again. Geoffrey Nurberg, from Stanford University, agrees. “People get better at writing by writing,” he says. “kids who are now doing text messaging, e-mails, and instant messages will write at least as well as, and possibly better than their parents.”
Linguist James says, for centuries, it is believed without exception that young people are harming the language. And you can bet your bottom dollar that when today’s teenagers become tomorrow’s parents. They too will think this way. James argues that languages do not and cannot become corrupted. They simply change to meet the new needs.
However, Netspeakers do agree that it is important to teach young people how to speak and write standard English. Cynthia McVey says, “I can understand Netspeak worries teachers and it’s important that they get across to their pupils that text messaging is for fun, but learning to write proper English is a must for their future.”
Perhaps we should give teenagers a little more trust anyway. Erin, aged 12, says, “I wouldn’t use text language in my homework. Texting is just for fun. ” 36. What is the main purpose of Paragraph 1? A. To lead in the topic of Netspeak. B. To show an example of creative methods. C. To express worries about using Netspeak. D. To give an example of a foreign language.
