look down upon sb.轻视某人 look into sth.

fearing that...

Step 7 Writing

1.Now read the passage to get more about archaeological finds:

Cofferdam and rafters(David Pendergast)

The well-preserved remains of a Taíno house have been found at Los Buchillones in Cuba's

Ciego de Avila Province. The oval dwelling, more than 60 feet in diameter, was discovered in the seabed under two and one-half feet of water. The site consisted of 20-foot-long main

posts,beams,rafters,roof timber,portions of thatch,pottery fragments,wooden bowls,charcoal from a hearth,and food remains.The excavation,made possible by use of a cofferdam,was “a bit like the game of pick-up sticks,only the sticks are much longer,and they're tangled in with a whole lot of

other stuff,” says Royal Ontario Museum archaeologist David Pendergast, who discovered the site.“What we found will add to our knowledge of Taíno techniques in woodworking and the selection and harvesting of wood.” He noted that “artifacts found during the past decade have shown that the Taí nos were very advanced wood carvers.”

The latest discovery comes on the heels of the investigation of La Aleta,a Taíno settlement in the Dominican Republic, where cave paintings dating from the time of the Spanish conquest were found.

3.Practice

据长子县文物旅游发展中心主任(an official of the Changzhi Center of Cultural Heritage and Tourism)李林介绍,“钱窖”在地下约1.5米深的地方,为约1.3米长、0.65米宽、1米高的长方体(cuboid)形状.

A money cellar containing 1.5 tons of ancient coins,including some 2000-year-old ones,has

been discovered by a villager in Changzhi County, north China's Shanxi Province.

“The man in Qianwanhu village discovered the cellar with some 10 000 coins, ranging from 3 cm to 1 cm in diameter, when he was digging a channel.” said Li Lin,an official of the Changzhi Center of Cultural Heritage and Tourism.

The “money cellar” was 1.5 meters under the earth, with coins being piled orderly into a cuboid of 1.3 meters long,0.65 meter wide and one meter high. Most of the coins were made during the Northern Song Dynasty with the remainders made during the Han Dynasty and Tang Dynasty. Many coins were in good condition, while some others were rusty because of the long time in the earth.

Archaeologists said the coins were there for three reasons:the coins were liege lords' private wealth;or they were buried by ancient Chinese private banks during war;or they belonged to rich people who buried them during war but had been forgotten.

The coins have been sent to local cultural relics authority. Step 8 Homework

Bronze Age burial site unearthed
