Main Teaching Points: The adverbial clause

1.of time introduced by while/as soon as/ the moment/ by the time e.g. 1) Tom walked in while I was typing in the office.

2) As soon as / The moment he came in, he asked for the file on the production quota.

3) By the time I got everything ready for him, (however), he’d gone. 2. of time and place introduced by whenever/and where; of concession introduced by however; of time/cause introduced by now that

e.g. 1) Whenever and wherever I see Sid, I tell him how harmful smoking is.

2) (But ) However hard I try to persuade him to give up smoking, he just won’t listen.

3. of condition introduced by or else; of purpose introduced by so (that) e.g. Now that you’ve started it, you’d better go on with it, or else you’ll regret it afterwards.

(Yes.) We will go on with it, so (that) we shall not regret it afterwards. 4. of manner introduced by as if/ as though, indicating an unreal situation; of time/ condition introduced by so long as/ as long as e.g. 1) Jack acted as if /as though nothing had happened.

2) He didn’t worry so long as / as long as there was still hope of

finding then.

5. of degree introduced by so far as; of alternative condition introduced by whether… or not

e.g. 1) So far as I know, Fanny’s not coming to the meeting. 2) But whether she’s coming or not, we won’t wait.

Useful expression

1.loaf away one’s time :loaf about/around v.游手好闲,无所事事;闲荡

e.g. A group of kids were loafing around outside.一群小孩在外面四处游荡。

n. a loaf of bread 一条面包

Two white loaves, please.请拿两条白面包。 2.take one’s words seriously

3.dismiss sth. from sth.去除,消除;摒除(思想、感情等) e.g. 1)He dismissed her from his mind.他挥去了对她的思念。 2)She claimed that she was unfairly dismissed from her post.她声称自己被无理免职。

3)Dismissing her fears, she climbed higher.她排除了恐惧,爬的更高了。 4.confess that 5.feel ashamed of

1.boom n. a sudden increase in trade and economic activity; a period of wealth and success(贸易和经济活动的)激增,繁荣 e.g. 1)a boom in car sales 汽车销售额的剧增

a boom year (for trade, exports, etc.)贸易、出口等兴盛的一年 a property/ housing boom房地产/住房的迅速发展

2)Living standards improved rapidly during the post-war boom.在战后那段繁荣昌盛的时期里,生活水平得到了迅速提高。

v. to make a loud deep sound 轰鸣;轰响

e.g.1)Outside, thunder boomed and crashed. 外面雷声隆隆,霹雳炸响。

2. regret v. 感到遗憾,懊悔,惋惜 n. 痛惜,懊悔,遗憾,失望 e.g. 1) If you don’t do it now, you’ll only regret it.你如果现在不做,

以后一定会后悔的。

2)The decision could be one he lives to regret. 这一决定也许会让他有后悔的一日。

3)I regret to inform you that your application has not been successful.我们很遗憾的通知你,你的申请未能通过。

4)What is your greatest regret(= the thing that you are most sorry about doing or not doing)?你最大的遗憾是什么?

5)He gave up teaching in 2001, much to the regret of his students.他于2001年放弃了教学,这使他的学生深感遗憾。

3. be obsessed with 着迷于,沉溺于

e.g. 1)When young, you are apt to be obsessed with your appearance.年轻时,你很可能会过分注重你的外表。

2)He was obsessed with the fear of unemployment.他老是害怕失业。

3) She was obsessed with the idea that she had been cheated.她总算心神不宁,觉得自己被骗了。

4. stoop v. (~ down) 俯身,弯腰

e.g. 1) She stooped down to pick up the child.她俯身抱起孩子。 2)The doorway was so low that he had to stoop.门廊很矮,他低下头才过得去。

3)He tends to stoop because he’s so tall.他个子太高了,所以时常晚着背。

4)She was unwillingly to believe anyone would stoop so low as to (卑鄙/堕落到…地步)steal a ring from a dead woman’s finger.她无法相信,真有人会龌龊到这种地步,竟然从一个死去的女人手上偷戒指。 5. flick v. (尤指用手指或手快速地)轻击,轻拍,轻拂,轻弹 e.g. 1) She flicked the dust off her collar.她轻轻弹掉了衣领上的灰尘。 2)The horse was flicking flies away with its tail.马轻轻甩动尾巴把苍蝇赶走。

3)James flicked a peanut at her.詹姆斯朝她轻轻弹了一颗花生。 4)Please don’t flick ash on the carpet!请勿把烟灰弹在地毯上。 5)He flicked a switch and all the lights went out.他啪地一声按了下开关,灯全灭了。 E. Retelling
