Unit project Objectives
? Help students to conquer the fear of delivering a public speech. ? Improve students’ performance in conducting an interview. ? Develop students’ ability and skills in writing a report.
Teaching steps
Step 1: Explain in class what the interview is for and how it can be conducted.
Divide the whole class into groups. It is important for each group to vote for a speaker who will note down the difficulties students have in delivering a public speech. Students are encouraged to do this by talking openly with each other.
Step 2: Ask students to interview two or three senior students who excel in delivering public speeches. Students should prepare their own interview questions carefully and try to derive the information they really need from their interviews.
Step 3: Have students summarize the strategies or suggestions they collected from the interview and prepare a report, including:
? Difficulties college students usually have in giving a public speech ? The interview:
√ Who they interviewed; √ Questions they asked;
√ Advice their subjects gave;
√ Their suggestions on giving a public speech.
Step 4: Ask the speaker of each group to present their report orally in the next class. From the reports, the students may then even form a larger picture about how one can conquer the fear of delivering a public speech.
Again, it is essential that the teacher give clear instructions to students, especially about what they should do after this class and before the next class.
