Today The Great British Bake Off winner Nadiya tells us all about her life and her new book Bake Me a Story.

Q:Could you tell us something about Bake Me a Story?

A:My kids pester (纠缠) me in the kitchen while I’m cooking and that’s when the idea came to me—what if I wrote a book that stays in the kitchen with stories that are matched with recipes? So the idea is that parents and kids can enjoy cooking together in the kitchen and read a story while they are waiting for the food to cook.

Q:You baked the Queen’s birthday cake! How was it?

A:It was a great honor to bake for the Queen and to be a part of history.I would love to bake for David Attenborough too!

Q:What is the first thing you learnt to cook?

A:One of the first things I learnt to cook was rice.I know that it is one of the hardest things to master when learning to cook.Rice being a staple (主食) in my family,it was important to learn how to make that before anything else.

Q:It takes so long to bake a cake.Is it annoying when it gets eaten so quickly?

A:Of course not! That’s the best bit—the look on people’s faces and the noises they make when eating it make all the hard work worth it.

Q:Do you have any advice for anyone wanting to get into baking?

Making it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee (a spelling competition) is an amazing achievement for any kid,but for 11-year-old Neil Maes, being born deaf made his journey especially unlikely.

After receiving cochlear implants (人工耳蜗) in both ears as a baby,he had to train his brain to understand spoken words. It took countless hours of speech therapy (疗法).

“We didn’t even know that he’d be able to talk,” said his mother,Christy Maes.

Now the soft-spoken kid from Belton,South Carolina is officially one of the nation’s top young spellers. He earned the right to take the stage in the final rounds of the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Neil’s parents have always given him a tip, coaching him to always ask the pronouncer for the meaning of a word,so that he can be sure he heard it correctly. Most contestants do this anyway.

“He’s able to spell very difficult words. You tell him,‘Spell this word,’ and he’s able to actually imagine what that sounds like in his head and spell the word. It’s actually quite impressive,” said Dr.Michael Hoa,who performed Neil’s cochlear implantation.“There’s a lot that goes into training your brain to do that.”

Neil’s parents didn’t know he was taking part in a spelling bee with his third-grade class until he came home and told them he had won.He made it all the way to his regional bee that year, finishing second. Now a naturally shy fifth-grader,Neil is already worn out from the busy bee-week schedule, but he seems happy.

“Our main hope out of all of this was to encourage people that are going to be facing what we had to face,” Christy said.

But Neil said coming to the bee has motivated him to study even harder,so he can return next year. “It’s just fun and I want to do it again,” Neil said.

A.The tip from Neil’s parents. B.The coach’s pronunciation. C.The meaning. D.The word. 6.What did Michael think of Neil? A.He’s amazing. B.He’s very lucky. C.He should study harder. D.He should use his imagination. 根据Michael医生在第六段中说的“he’s able to actually imagine what that sounds like in his head and spell the word. It’s actually quite impressive”和“There’s a lot that goes into training your brain to do that.” 7.What’s the best title for the text? A.Hard Training Will Finally Pay Off B.We Can Do More for Disabled Children C.Spelling Bees Are Becoming More Popular D.Deaf 11-year-old Competes in National Spelling Bee 答案D 解析标题归纳题。

I was speaking to the faculty at John F.Kennedy Elementary School in Canton,Massachusetts,a couple of weeks ago.I arrived early and decided to take a walk.

There was a Little League field nearby.I spotted a sign on the fence. The sign, posted by the Canton Little League, read: PLEASE REMEMBER ·These are kids. ·This is a game.

·The coaches volunteer.

·You don’t play for the Red Sox (an American professional baseball team).

I had to laugh, especially at the joke about the Red Sox.But I think the sign is a good reminder to everyone connected with youth sports—kids, parents, coaches and the folks who run the leagues—what is important about the games.

First, kids who play are just kids. They are not mini professional athletes. So youth sports leagues and coaches should take it easy on them.Kids don’t need long schedules and lots of faraway games or high-pressure tournaments.

Adults should try to set up youth leagues so more kids play with and against kids from nearby schools and neighborhoods. They should make it easier for kids to play a sport for just a few months so that they can try other sports.Kids shouldn’t play one sport year-round.

And everyone should stop worrying about which team wins or loses.A friend of mine who coached a lot of youth teams once told me,“When you coach kids,it’s not how many you win or lose, but how many sign up for next season.” According to the Aspen Institute’s latest “State of Play” report, fewer kids are signing up.Research indicates a smaller percentage of kids ages 6 to 12(37 percent) are playing team sports on a regular basis than in 2011(42 percent).

The aim of youth sports should be to have fun, learn some skills and enjoy being part of a team. 8.Why did the author go around in the school? A.Choose youth leagues carefully. B.Get sports playing easily for kids. C.Encourage kids to stick to one sport. D.Make a year-round schedule for kids.

B.Disappointed. D.Worried.

11.What can we know from the Aspen Institute’s report? A.Kids today are less athletic. B.Fewer youth leagues are set up. C.Kids are focusing more on succeeding. D.Youth group sports are losing popularity.

Dog owners who lived near Chicago’s Soldier Field knew to watch out for the coyote(丛林狼). The wild, doglike animal lived somewhere among the tall buildings near the football stadium. As the sun went down each evening, the coyote would lie in the grass next to a parking lot, waiting.Within his view, people walked their dogs along a bike trail. Each night, the coyote would charge at the first dog to come along.

Dr.Stanley Gehrt,a scientist at the Ohio State University, led the team that solved the problem.Besides studying coyotes,he and his co-workers teach people ways to avoid problems with coyotes. In short,he says,“Don’t feed them, and manage your pets.”

The secret to the coyote’s success is intelligence. To survive in the wild,a coyote must hunt small animals, and avoid becoming a meal for wolves or bears.“This way of living creates a super-smart animal,” Dr.Gehrt says. One of the smartest changes coyotes made was to hide during the day and come out mainly at night in the city.

Coyotes have also learned to avoid their biggest killer: cars. One coyote has been seen sitting patiently at a busy crossroads. She may not know how traffic lights work, but she has learned that the cars will soon stop long enough for her to cross the street.

The male that charge at passing dogs near Soldier Field is an example.Dr.Gehrt and his co-workers had already been watching the coyote for months, and the animal had always avoided dogs. But now he and his mate had a home with young coyote on top of the parking lot nearby. He was charging at the dogs to protect his family.

The researchers solved the problem. When the coyote pair appeared in the evening, they ran toward them, shouting and shaking a noisemaker—a coffee can with coins rattling inside.“Usually, that’s all you have to do,” Dr.Gehrt says.“You do it once, and you’ll never see that coyote again.” Finally, the coyote pair moved out of the parking lot.
