Abstract: Vicissitudes of the times and different cultural forms have shaped different designated urban functions and governance approaches. Structured on the basis of economic rationality, market principle, capital logic and other core elements stemming from western civil societies, the idea of “city” has been dominating urban governance since the modern times, rendering the instrumentalized growth to urban governance. The imitative and catch-up pattern of the urban modernization in China has triggered various urban problems, which have been affecting the urban life of the people. Against the backdrop of the new era, the connotation and orientation of cities bear new significance in the era, which have been the main field, the supporting force and the value appeal for good life and, by being anchored in human civilization, are constructing the contemporary social presentation pattern and the future direction of development.
