It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen 15 in almost a month. The crops were dying. If we didn’t see some rain soon, we would lose everything.

I was in the kitchen making lunch that day when I saw my son, Billy, walking toward the 16 . Trying to be as quiet as possible, he was walking with great 17 . Minutes after he disappeared into the forests, he came running out again, toward the house. Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that 18 way toward the woods. I couldn’t take it any longer and I 19 him.

He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked, being very 20 not to spill(溢出) the water he carried.

As I came closer, I saw the most amazing sight. Several large deer(鹿) stood in front of him. Billy walked right up to them. But the deer did not hurt him nor 21 move as Billy knelt down(跪下). And then I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, very thirsty, lift its head to drink the water in my boy's hand. When the water was gone, Bill ran back to the house. He came to the tap, opened it and let the water slowly 22 his “cup”.

When he stood up and began to turn back, I was there in front of him. His little eyes were full of tears. “I’m not 23 ,” was all he said. The week before, he had made the same trouble with our horses, which caused him a speech from his father about the importance of saving water.

This time I 24 him, with a small pot(壶) of water from the kitchen. I let him take care of the baby deer alone for it was his job. As my tears began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. All I can say is that the rain that day saved our farm, just like the actions of one little boy who saved another.

Chip was in first grade when I arrived at his school as a counselor (辅导员). It was surprising to me that he was described as an angry, uncontrollable and evil (惹人厌的) boy. How could such a little boy, after being in school only one year, be considered \I came to know Chip well enough to see that he was neither evil nor uncontrollable.

But, one day, Chip threw a chair at his teacher and was sent to my office. I asked him what made him do this. He replied that his teacher hated him. He felt there was no way to ever get her to like him. I asked him if he would tell his teacher this. He nodded, and we called her into my office.

When the teacher came, . He then said that he knew he was a very, very bad boy, and he didn't think anyone could ever like him. His teacher listened to him with heartfelt compassion. Then she gave him a big warm hug, telling him she didn't hate him at all and, in fact, she cared very much about him. Only sometimes Chip's behavior really scared her. It was clear to both Chip and me that she really meant it.

I put my left arm on his shoulders and the right hand on his heart. I told him how wonderful and lovely I saw him to be. I praised how special and brave he was to express his hurt feeling.

As I was speaking to him, his whole body came to rest on my right hand next to his heart. It was a moment in time unlike anything I had experienced before. From then on, I'm pleased to see his behavior improved through the rest of school years.

A child's mind is clear and sensitive (敏感的). He receives whatever others saw without protection. It is as easy to consider someone hopeless as it is to consider him able in his own special way. 28.Which of the following is the best sentence to fill in the blank in the passage?

C. Expect higher, act better. D. When there is a will, there is a way

C

A box boy at a supermarket was hard work. People came to the counter(柜台) and you put things in their bags for them and carried things to their cars. I had worked as a box boy in a supermarket in central Los Angles for ten months when I was seventeen.

While working, I wear a plate(标牌) with my name on it. One day I met someone I knew years ago. I remembered his name and said, “Mr. Castle, how are you?” We talked about this and that. As he left, he said, “It was nice talking to you, Brett.” I felt great that he remembered me. Then I looked down at my name plate. Oh no. He didn’t remember me at all. He just read the name plate. I wish I had put “Irving” down on my name plate. If he’d have said, “Oh yes, Irving, how could I forget you?” I’d have been ready for him. There’s nothing personal here.21·世纪*教育

The manager often shouted orders. One of these was: You couldn’t accept tips(小费). Okay, I’m outside and I put the bags in the car. For a lot of people, the natural reaction(反应) is to take a quarter and give it to me. I’d say, “I’m sorry, I can’t.” They’d get angry. When you give someone a tip, you mean being polite. You take a quarter and you put it in their hands and you expect them to say, “Oh, thanks a lot.” When you say “I’m sorry, I can’t”, they feel a little put down. They say, “No one will know.” And they put it in your pocket. You say“I really can’t.”. It gets to a point where you almost have to hurt a person to prevent him from tipping you. Accepting tips was a friendly thing and made the customer feel good. I just couldn’t understand the strangeness of some people’s ideas. One lady in fact put it in my pocket, got in the car, and drove away. I would have had to throw the quarter at her or eaten it or something.

I had decided that one year was enough. Some people needed the job to stay alive. I guess I had money and could afford to hate it and give it up.

31. What can be the best title for this text?

A. How Hard Life is for Box Boys B. Getting along with Customers C. Why I Gave up My Job D. The Art of Taking Tips 32. From the second paragraph, we can infer that ________.

A. the writer didn’t like the impersonal part of his job B. with a name plate, people can easily start talking C. Mr. Castle mistook Irving for Brett D. Irving was the writer’s real name

32. Which is the correct order of the following sentences? a. Mr. Castle called the boy name.

b. The boy got to know Mr. Castle. c. The boy realized Mr. Castle forgot him. d. The boy began to work in this supermarket. e. The boy met Mr. Castle and had a talk.

A. a-d-c-b-e B. c-a-b-e-d C. b-d-e-a-c D. d-b-a-e-c

D

Do you think telling lies, whether a little or a lot, isn’t that big of a deal? Well, that depends on the situation. If someone asks, “Does this dress make me look fat?” we might all lie. We might say, “Of course not. You look great.” Lying to spare someone’s feelings is one thing. Lying to destroy(毁坏) someone’s character is another.

“What’s really terrible is that you can’t cancel a big lie,” says a man we’ll call Morgan. “I promise if you go house to house to say, ‘I feel terrible I wrongly charged my neighbor with stealing,’ the lie will spread like a fire. You can’t call back a lie very easily.”

Morgan goes on to say that lies have hurt people more than guns. “We have a grandfather in our church whose son-in-law told people the man treated his own children badly,” Morgan says. “To this day, we don’t know whether it is true or not. I would doubt it, but I can’t take a chance, especially if he is working with young people in our church.”

“I worked with a man who was stealing money from our boss,” says a man we’ll call Fred. “He was good at lying and doctoring the books (做假账). I worried, ‘If I turned him in, and he got out of the trouble, my career at our company would come to an end.’”

Fred says he came up with a plan to drop hints (暗示) to the company owner. “I found printed materials on the dishonest worker. I started mailing them to the company owner without leaving my name. Then one day, over lunch, I told my boss he should have the books checked carefully. He got the hint.”21*cnjy*com

Fred told us that when the books were checked, the dishonest worker tried to blame him for the mistakes. However, Fred told the company owner he had been dropping hints for some time. The boss got the picture. Fred kept his job. The dishonest guy was sent away.

How to make a liar(说谎者) public takes work. It can be done, but you might have to give others time to accept the truth. The slower you move, the more control you will have.

34. The underlined phrase “spare someone’s feelings” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by .

A. destroy someone’s feelings B. avoid hurting someone C. put someone in a bad mood D. express someone’s ideas 35. Which of the following can be used to conclude Paragraph 2?

A. It’s no use crying over spilt milk. B. Every man has his misses. C. There is no smoke without fire. D. Pride goes before a fall. 36. How does the author develop this passage?

A. By listing numbers. B. By comparing.

C. By giving examples. D. By following order of time. 37. What can we know from the passage?

A. It was true that the grandfather treated his own children badly. B. It is not difficult to let a dishonest man tell the truth.

C. Fred’s boss believed the dishonest worker’s words and sent Fred away. D. To make a liar public, we should find out useful ways first.
