Today, we have maps to guide us that use the imaginary lines oflatitude (纬度) and longitude (经度). However, lines of latitudeand longitude did not always exist.

An old problem

In 1714, the British Parliament offered a huge reward to the person who could find a way to calculate longitude. Some seekers of the prize thought that the way to solve the problem involved creating a timepiece that could keepperfect time on the ocean. In 1727, an English clockmaker named John Harrison chose to try to solve the longitude problem in this way.

68._________

John Harrison created a new kind of clock. 69._________In 1735, Harrison sent the first of his clocks to theBritish Board of Longitude.
