He ased if we could let him have the food on trust. He promised to repay me the net day.

I couldn’t help staring at him. I wondered what ind of person he had been ten or twenty years before, and what he would be lie if fortune had gone his way. I had a hurt in my heart for this ind of human soul, all alone in the world. I told him that I was sorry, but store rules didn’t allow me to do so. I felt stupid and unind saying this, but I valued my job.

Just then, another man, standing behind the first, spoe up. If anything, he looed more pitiable.“Charge it to me,” was all he said.

Wal through the Amaon rainforest today and you will find it is steamy, warm, damp and thic. But if you had been around 15, 000 years ago, during the last ice age, would it have been the same? For more than 30 years, scientists have been arguing about how rainforests lie the Amaon might have reacted to the cold, dry climates of the ice ages, but until now, no one has reached a satisfying answer.

Rainforests lie the Amaon are important for mopping up CO2 from the atmosphere and helping to slow global warming. Currently the trees in the Amaon tae in around 500 million tons of CO2 each year equal to the total amount of CO2 giving off in the U each year. But how will the Amaon react to future climate change? If it gets drier, will it still survive and continue to draw down CO2?

Scientists hope that they will be able to learn in advance how the rainforest will manage

in the future by understanding how rainforests reacted to climate change in the past. Unfortunately, getting into the Amaon rainforest and collecting information are very difficult. To study past climate, scientists need to loo at fossilied pollen, ept in lae mud. Going bac to the last ice age means drilling deep down into lae sediments (沉淀物) which requires specialied equipment and heavy machinery. There are very few roads and paths, or places to land helicopters and aeroplanes. Rivers tend to be the easiest way to enter the forest, but this still leaves vast areas between the rivers completely unsampled (未取样). So far, only a handful of cores have been drilled that go bac to the last ice age and none of them provide enough information to prove how the Amaon rainforest reacts to climate change. 28. What does the underlined phrase “mopping up” in the second paragraph mean? A. Giving up B. Taing in C. Wiping out D. Giving out 29. How will the Amaon rainforest react to future climate change? A. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?

A. It’s hard to collect information for studies of the past climate in the Amaon rainforest. B. It’s impossible to prove how climate changes in the Amaon rainforest. C. It’s important to drill deep down into lae sediments to collect information.

D. It’s necessary to have specialied equipment and machinery to study the past climate.

31. What is the best title for this passage?

A. Studies of the Rainforests B. Climates of the Amaon C. Secrets of the Ice Age D. Changes of the Rainforests

Food piced up just a few seconds after being dropped is less liely to contain bacteria than if it is left for longer periods of time, according to the findings of research carried out at Aston University’s School of Life and Health Sciences. The findings suggest there may be some scientific basis of the \only had contact with the floor for five seconds or less. Although people have long followed the “5-second rule”, until now it was unclear whether it actually helped.

The study, undertaen by final year Biology students and led by Anthony Hilton, Professor of Microbiology at Aston University, monitored the transfer of the common bacteria from a variety of indoor floor types as carpet, cement floor to toast, pasta, biscuit and a sticy sweet when contact was made from 3 to 30 seconds. The results showed that time is a significant factor in the transfer of bacteria from a floor surface to a piece of food, and the type of flooring the food has been dropped on has an effect, with bacteria least liely to transfer from carpeted surfaces and most liely to transfer from cement flooring surfaces to moist foods maing contact for more than 5 seconds. Professor Hilton said, \the floor still carries an infection ris as it very much depends on which bacteria are present on the floor at the time.\

The Aston team also carried out a survey of the number of people who employ the “five-second rule”. The survey showed that 87% of the people surveyed said they would eat food dropped on the floor, or already have done so. 55% of those that would, or have eaten food dropped on the floor are women. 81% of the women who would eat food from the floor would follow the “5-second rule”. Professor Hilton added, “Our study showed that a surprisingly large majority of people are happy to consume dropped food, with women the most liely to do so. But they are also more liely to follow the “5-second rule”, which our research has shown to be more than an old wives’ tale.” 32. Which ind of food is not used in the study? A. Toast bread B. Italian noodles C. Chips D. Sticy candy 33. How did Professor Hilton feel after analying how many people chose to eat dropped food?

A. Puled B. Upset C. Satisfied D. Astonished 34. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? A. Most men would follow the “5-second” rule.

B. People who would eat food dropped on the floor are in the minority. C. Bacteria are easier to transfer from cement floors than carpeted surfaces.

D. Food dropped on the cement floor is less liely to be polluted than that on the carpet. 35. What can be learned from the passage?

A. The food which is dropped on the floor can be eaten safely.

B. The research may provide some scientific evidence to the “5-second rule”. C. The bacteria have no negative effect on the safety of food. D. People surveyed in the research are willing to accept the idea.
