A woman was in a hurry to go to the airport. She told the cab driver to drive quickly. She was so absorbed in her own thoughts that she was not aware they were going by a different route. Suddenly, a man got inside the cab. He took her handbag where she had placed her visa, passport, and all her money for the trip.
The driver, who was in cahoots with the robber, left her in the middle of that dark street. She cursed the world for being so mean to her, and thought how unlucky she was in that situation. That very same night, she heard some shocking news. Tears flowed down her face. Flight 230, which was the plane that she was supposed to have boarded, had crashed. If she had not lost her precious belongings, she could have lost something far more important—her life. Sometimes bad things really happen. There are times when nothing seems to go our way. So what should we do about it? We must get rid of all these frustrations and start all over again in the faith that we will get what we deserve. Don’t waste your time and energy on things that can't be changed. Continuous worrying will only affect your health and you'll be doing much more damage than what was previously done. What if it was the other way round? What if we never ran out of good luck?

But when he one day made it to the front page of the newspaper again, it was a different story. He had been killed because of his riches. If you attain good luck, you can never be too secure about it. Life is so unpredictable. You never know what will happen next.
Live one day at a time. We sometimes subject (使屈从于…) ourselves to unnecessary emotional trouble. Live for the moment. Do what must be done for the present and the future will turn out just fine. Before she was Queen of England, Princess Elizabeth wanted to join the Auxiliary Territorial Service (A. T. S.), a female branch of the British military. It was World War II , and women worked at jobs traditionally held by men, who were now overseas fighting. Elizabeth was a teenager and first had to convince her parents about her plan. Her father, King George VI, thought it was too dangerous. But Princess Elizabeth would not take no for an answer. “I ought to do as other girls of my age do,” she said firmly. After some months, her parents finally agreed to let her join. Princess Elizabeth did not receive any special treatment in the A. T. S.. The only thing different was that she returned to Windsor Castle each night to sleep.
When she arrived at the A. T. S. camp depot(兵站)for her first day of training, Princess Elizabeth was greeted by a car with its wheels off. In the weeks that followed, she learned to take apart an engine and then assemble(装配)it. The princess loved the training, admitting, “I’m a mechanic at last.” Princess Elizabeth worked on car, truck, and even tank engines. She also learned to read maps and drive officer transport cars, ambulances and military trucks. To complete her A. T. S. training, she was required to drive a big truck on her own. The king and queen thought driving a truck was too dangerous, but before they could let her know how they felt, they discovered Elizabeth driving a truck onto the palace grounds. She had driven from the A. T. S. camp through the busy London streets all by herself. Princess Elizabeth became Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1952. Now in her eighties, she still drives. Queen Elizabeth loves horses and still rides four times each week. She also

How many different emotions (情感) do you think you can communicate to people with your face? Do you have the same facial expressions as people from different cultures? Read this to find out what scientists have just discovered about this topic.
New research suggests that there are only four basic facial expressions of emotion. However, how these expressions are interpreted (理解) might depend on where you are from. Research by scientists from the University of Glasgow has challenged the traditional view of how the face expresses emotions. Until now, it was widely believed that six basic emotions-happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise and disgust(厌恶)—were expressed and recognized across different cultures. However, the University of Glasgow's work now suggests that the human face only has four basic expressions of emotion. This is because some pairs of emotions are impossible to distinguish (区分). Fear and surprise, for example, both share wide open eyes. The facial expressions for anger and disgust also look the same.
So if our faces are only able to express four basic emotions, how do we communicate a much more complex (复杂的) variety of feelings? The study found that the way expressions are interpreted is different in different cultures. Looking at how people from the East and West look at different parts of the face during facial expression recognition, scientists found that although there are some common features across cultures, the six basic facial expressions of emotion are not recognized universally.
What interests people about the cross-cultural aspect of the research? “This work leads to understanding which emotions we share and appreciating our differences.” 32. What did the University of Glasgow find?
A. Facial expressions express emotions. B. Six basic emotions can be recognized. C. Some basic facial expressions are unusual. D. Some of the six facial expressions are similar. 33. Which group may be the four basic facial emotions? A. Sadness, fear, anger and surprise. B. Anger, sadness, fear and happiness.
