Directions: Read the following excerpt from Telling Tales: Informers for the State and answer the questions that follow. The Stasi The Oscar-winning movie, The Lives of Others offers an insight into the operations of the East German Ministry for State Security in the 1980s. An agent of the Stasi, as the ministry was known, is shown having doubts over the surveillance of a noted playwright. The writer’s house is being bugged because a government minister needs a pretext to steal his lover – a famous actress. Such abuses of power were frequent under the German Democratic Republic, which ruled East Germany from 1949-1990. At the height of its operations in the 1980s, the Stasi had an estimated 174,000 informants on its books. Some historians believe the actual number could be closer to half a million, meaning that roughly one in every 32 people was an informer. The Red Guards Even in this day and age, China’s government is known for keeping a close eye on its citizens and clamping down on criticism. During the Cultural Revolution of 1966-1976, however, accusations, informing and denunciations reached fever pitch. Millions of people were persecuted as “class enemies” and “counter-revolutionaries.” In many cases, people were beaten or executed based on an accusation by a neighbor, colleague or even a relative, with little or no proof. Sometimes the accusations were just made up by people with personal grudges. Young people were among the most keen and active participants in spying on people and reporting them for political crimes. In order to prove their loyalty to China’s revered leader Mao Zedong, many joined a paramilitary movement that became known as the Red Guards. These youngsters even went as far as to report and denounce their parents for criticizing Mao, in some cases recommending that their father or mother be executed. 17.
