would rather, would sooner, would(just)as soon, had rather, had better, had sooner, can not but, may(just)as well等可用作情态动词。例如:
(1)The soldier would sooner die than surrender.
(2)The brave soldier would as soon die as yield to such an enemy. (3)I’d rather walk than take a bus.
(4)If you don’t like to swim, you may just as well stay at home.
would(had)rather, would(had)sooner, would(just)as soon后可跟that 引导的从句,that 常省去,从句要用虚拟语气。
(1)I would rather you came on Sunday. (2)I would sooner you hadn’t asked.
1. Peter _____ come with us tonight, but he isn't very sure yet. A. must B. may C. can D. will 答案:B。 2. —Shall we go skating or stay at home? —Which _____ do?
A. do you rather B. would you rather C. will you rather D. should you rather
答案:B。本题考查情态动词rather的用法,would rather +do sth 意为“宁愿”,本题为疑问句,would 提前,所以选B。 3. —Could I borrow your dictionary? —Yes, of course, you_____.
A. might B. will C. can D. should
允许某人做某事时,用can和 may来表达,不能用could或might。 4. —Shall I tell John about it?
—No, you ___. I've told him already.
A. needn’t B. wouldn’t C. mustn’t D. shouldn’t 答案:A。 5. —Don’t forget to come to my birthday party tomorrow. —______.
A. I don’t B. I won’t C. I can’t D. I haven’t 答案:B。
6. Tom ought not to _____ me your secret, but he meant no harm. A. have told B. tell C. be telling D. having told 答案:A。

Life really should be one long journey of joy for children born with a world of wealth at their feet.
Internationally famous child doctor Robert Coles is the world’s top expert on the influence of money on children. He has written a well-known book on the subject, “The Privileged Ones” and his research shows that too much money in the family can cause as many problems as too little. “Obviously there are certain advantages to being rich,” says the 53-year-old doctor,
“such as better health, education and future work prospects. But the most important is the quality of family life. Money can’t buy love.”
It can buy a lot of other things, however; and that’s where the trouble starts. Rich kids have so much to choose from that they often become confused. Over-indulgence by their parents can make them spoilt. They tend to travel more than other children, from home to home and country to country, which causes feelings of restlessness.
“But privileged children do have a better sense of their positions in the world,” adds Mr. Coles, “and they are more self-assured.” The rich children inherit the property from their parents and enjoy a high income. So money will never be one of their problems. “However, they will have a sense of isolation,” warns Dr. Coles, “and they could suffer from the hardship of not being able to deal with the everyday world because they will never really be given the chance. Everything they have achieved is because of an accident of birth. There can be no tremendous inner satisfaction about that.”
Today’s wealthy parents perhaps realize their riches can be more of a heavy load than a happiness to their children. So the first thing for them to consider is to ensure that their families are as rich in love as they are in money.

My first performance in front of an audience was coming up soon. I tried as hard as I could to remain calm, but my heart was racing. I stared down at my sweat-covered, shaking hands.
I looked up again at the audience, realizing that there were real people. They were not just my mum and dad, who would say, “Good job!” even if I messed up the entire piece.
What if I had the wrong music? What if I played the wrong notes? As it turned out, I was never able to answer these questions because the spotlight(荧光灯)was waiting for me. I grasped my hands tightly together, drying off the sweat.
Slowly I walked to the mud-brown piano in the center of the room. It contained 88 demanding keys, which were waiting impatiently to be played. I swallowed the golfball-sized lump(隆起部分)in my throat and sat down. Slowly, I opened the music. Next, I rested my still shaking hands on the ivory
As my fingers played across the keys, I was becoming more unsure of my preparation for this moment. But the memory of my years of training came flooding back. I knew that I had practiced this piece so many times that I could play it backwards if requested.
Although at one point I accidentally played two keys instead of the intended one, I continued to move my fingers automatically(自动的).
My eyes burned holes into(were fixed on)the pages in front of me. There was no way that I was going to lose my concentration. To keep this to myself, I leaned forward and focused carefully on the music.
When I came to the end of the page, a warning went off inside my head: DON’T MAKE A MISTAKE WHEN YOU TURN THE PAGE!
Needless to say, I obeyed myself with all my heart and mind. And, proud of my “page-turning” feat(技艺), I finished the rest of the piece without making a single mistake.
After the final note died away, a celebration went into action inside my head. I had finished. I had mastered the impossible.

A. didn’t make any mistake in the performance
