Ⅴ.阅读理解

A

“I've changed my mind. I wanted to have a telescope, but now I want my daddy back.” Lucien Lawrence's letter to Father Christmas written after his schoolteacher father had been knifed to death outside his school gate, must have touched every heart. Lucien went on to say that without his father he couldn't see the stars in the sky. When those who we love depart from us, we cannot see the stars for a while.

But Lucien, the stars are still there, and one day, when you are older and your tears have gone, you will see them again. And, in a strange way, I expect that you will find your father is there too, in your mind and in your heart. I find that my parents, long dead now, still figure in many of my dreams and that I think of them perhaps more than I ever did when they were alive. I still live to please them and I'm still surprised by their reactions. I remember that when I became a professor, I was so proud, or rather so pleased with myself, that I couldn't wait to cable my parents. The reply was a long time in coming, but when it did, all Mother said was “I hope this means that now you will have more time for the children!” I haven't forgotten. The values of my parents still live on.

It makes me pause and think about how I will live on in the hearts and minds of my children and of those for whom I care. Would I have been as ready as Philip Lawrence have been to face the aggressors (挑衅者), and to lay down my life for those in my care? How many people would want me back for Christmas? It's a serious thought, one to give me pause.

I pray silently, sometimes, in the dead of night, that ancient cry of a poet “Deliver_my_soul_the_sword_(剑),_and_my_darling_from_the_power_of_the_dog.”Yet I know the death comes to us all; and sometimes come suddenly. We must therefore plan to live forever, but live as if we will die tomorrow. We live on, I'm sure, in the lives of those we loved, and therefore we ought to have a care for what they will remember and what they will treasure. If more parents knew this in their hearts to be true, there might be fewer knives on our streets today.

A 10-year -old boy fatally shot his father on Friday, striking him several times as he sat in the

front seat of a SUV to pick up the boy from his mother's home for a weekend visit.

The incident happened at about 345 p.m. in the 1700 block of Cedar Cove Court, said Sgt. B.E. Williams of the Harris Country Sheriff's Department.

An investigation found that Rick James Lohstroh, 41, was shot by his son, who was sitting in the back seat of the man's Toyota 4-Runner, said Sgt. B. E. Williams of the Harris Country

Sheriff's Department. The shooting took place outside the home of Lohstroh's exwife, where the boy lives with his mother and a 7-year-old brother.

“We're not certain of anything until we finish our investigation,” Williams said. “The information we have at this time is that the 10-year-old boy did fire the weapon.”

The mother and the 7-year-old brother were inside the house when the shooting occurred,

said Williams.

Williams said the gun belonged to the boy's mother. After firing shots through the back seat, the boy exited the back of the vehicle and continued to fire at it.

The man died on the way to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Lohstroh was a doctor at the University of Texas Medical Branch.

Precinct 5 constables have reported disturbances at the residence in the past. The man and woman shared custody (监护)of the children.

Williams said the mother and the boy were still in the home talking to investigators on Friday night.

Neighbors described the family as being quiet and keeping to themselves.

Justin Gray, 17, was walking in the neighborhood when he heard gunshots. “We've had a suicide (自杀) in this neighborhood once, but never anything like this,” Gray said.

6.The best title for the news should be ________. A.Boy Shots Father

B.Shooting Kills a Father C.An Unbelievable Tragedy D.A Ten-Year-Old Boy's Cruelty

7.Which of the following is TRUE according to the news? A.The father is not responsible for the boy.

B.The family don't like associating with their neighbours. C.The boy lives with Rick James Lohstroh. D.The boy has no brothers or sisters.

答案:B 细节理解题。本题难度不大,认真通读全文即可找到正确答案,A、C、D三个选项所陈述的均不是事实。故正确答案为B。

8.What can we infer from the news report?

A.The tragedy happened because the boy had seen too many horror-films.

B.The boy hated his father, who deserted him and his mother. C.Such things often occurred in this neighbourhood. D.The boy's parents got divorced.
