You pay for your lunch with money, for your weekly groceries with moneyand for your education with money. You may, of course, pay for your purchases with a credit card. But when your credit card companybills you on the amountof your purchases, you eventually have to settle your account
payable with money. Moneyin this respect, acts as a “medium of exchange”. Anotherfunction of money is that itis a unit of account. Money possesses such other functions, as a store of value, and a
standard of put-off payment. All these functions will be explained in Section 1, Chapter 2.
Money, therefore, can be “socially acceptable”. It depends on people’s confidence in using or owning money. Once moneyis recognizedby the state as a medium of exchange by law, it is legalized.
In order to make money exchange possible, money must possess the following characteristics. ●Portability — When you go shopping, you don’t want to carry a big basket of money to pay for whatyou buy. Money in theform of paper notes or coins requireslittle effort to carry and provides
convenience in settling trades.
● — Money can be divided into several units of accounts. Therefore, if you want
to buy a candy bar, you can use your coins; if you want to buy a car, you pay for the car with some large denomination (面值) banknotes. It depends on what you buy.
●Durability — In order to reducethe production cost, money has to be durable for its life in use. Metal, (e.g. gold, silver) was used as money because metals are more durable.
●Scarcity — The productionof moneyshould be controlled either through laws or limited supply. If you and I could produce money with little cost, it would lose its value as a medium of exchange. In the past, money was made from precious metals; today it can be produced only by the state.
●Purchasing power stability — People will lose confidence in money if its value in terms of purchasing power changes frequently.
