Have you heard of Creative Growth?
The Oakland institution offers a professional studio space where adult artists with developmental, mental and physical disabilities can create work.It also provides gallery
exhibitions, representation, guidance,a community of like-minded artists and a safe space in which to grow. The late Judith Scott, whose artwork lit up the Brooklyn Museum in a retrospective (回顾展) last year, was a Creative Growth artist who suffered from Down syndrome and hearing loss.
“It’s the best facility for local adult artists living with disabilities,” Jonah Olson,an artist and former teacher in Creative Growth’s printmaking studio said.“The amount of work they produce and the quality of it are remarkable.”
Olson, who now lives in Los Angeles,is a member of the band L.A.Takedown.Along with his bandmates,Olson decided to use the opportunity to expose Southern California to lesser known contemporary outsider artists, living and working just a few hours up north.
“I’ve had an interest in outsider art for a long time,” Olson explained.“You make art as a child and the reasons for doing it now,in my case, are no different now from what they were then. It’s very basic.Intrinsic (本质的).I think that’s what drew me to art made by people with developmental disabilities.”
D.Its geographical advantage.
B.$32.5. D.$46.
B.At First Avenue.
C.At Ogden Avenue. D.At the Hollywood Station.
The show,a survey of the space’s better-known and lesser-known names, loosely revolves around themes of art and music.“Not a lot of the artwork specifically is about music, but we are grouping the work around the idea of being in the cities of L.A.and Oakland,” Olson said.
The artists of Creative Growth will be on view throughout the month of August, coupled with musical performances and film screenings organized by L.A.Takedown.All proceeds from the month will benefit the artists and space. The money will be used to improve the condition of the studio and for the development of the artists.“L.A.doesn’t really have a place like Creative Growth,” Olson said, discussing his hopes for the show.

There was a time an event would not begin without a photographer.“I remember the days when event organizers would even delay a show if the photographer was running late,” says Balachandra Raju,a photographer of Sathyam studio,a still surviving photo studio in India’s southern city of Chennai.
Photo studios are facing extinction in the digital age.But as they struggle to continue doing the business, one research project is looking for ways to preserve their legacy(遗产) by digitizing archival(档案的) pictures.
The project, funded by the British Library, visited around 100 photo studios across the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu and digitized 10,000 prints. Many of the photos were taken between 1880-1980,and they ranged from pictures of families and famous stars to weddings and funerals.“The digital archive will be useful for those interested in history.” Said Zoe E Headley, one of the researchers.Ramesh Kumar, another researcher on the project, called it a “gold mine” for photographers.“The research we’ve done also highlights production techniques used before digital photography arrived in our cities and towns,” he said.
However, the researchers would often find old photos piled on top of one another in the storage room of a studio.“ No one had bothered to clean them,” Kumar said, adding that many photos had been damaged due to the hot and wet weather in Tamil Nadu.
The owner of Nallapillai studio in central Tamil Nadu said he spends about 20,000 rupees (£230;$310) each month to run the studio that was founded by his great grandfather almost 150 years ago.To survive in this digital age has been a struggle.“Many customers don’t book us for special events anymore,” he said, adding that they have all got smartphones to do the job.“I’m not sure if photo studios will exist five years from now,” he said. But this is why, according to Mr Raju, this archival project is so important.

The idea of robot rulers, friends and lovers has been a topic of science fiction novels for years. But according to one mathematical model of how our brains create consciousness, emotional machines will never exist.
This is because computers can’t handle any process that completely integrates(整合) information,so they cannot be conscious or feel, one expert says.
A mathematical model for consciousness, developed by Giulio Tononi at the University of Wisconsin-Madison,says that the ability to integrate information is a key feature of consciousness.
He believes that integrated information can’t be broken down into smaller pieces in conscious minds, because the brain contextualizes(将……融入背景) information.
For example, when we see a red circle our brains don’t see the shape as a colourless circle plus a shapeless coloured area,New Scientist reported.Instead we see it as a whole—a red circle;we understand the “wider picture”.
It’s easy enough for machines to edit a collection of individual images, but memories are made up of a bank of intertwined (相互交织的) images and experiences and cannot be changed in the same way.
Researchers have used mathematics to show that computers cannot handle the complex processes needed to fit pieces of information together perfectly.
Therefore,if consciousness is based on the integration of lots of pieces of information, computers can’t be conscious and can’t experience emotions like humans.
Professor Phil Maguire of the National University of Ireland in Maynooth says that consciousness cannot be created in a physical machine in limited time using limited memory.
“It doesn’t necessarily mean that there is some magic going on in the brain that involves some forces that can’t be explained physically. It is just so complex that it’s beyond our abilities to change it,” he said.
B.Negative. D.Dissatisfied.
