Two brothers, Herbert and James, lived with their mother and a cat named Edgar. James was particularly devoted to the cat, and when he had to leave town for several days, he left Herbert careful instructions about the pet’s care. At the end of his first day away, James telephoned his brother, “How is Edgar?” “Edgar is dead.” Herbert answered. There was a pause. Then James said, “Herbert, you’re insensitive (漠然的). You know how close I was to Edgar. You should have broken the news to me slowly. When I asked about Edgar tonight, you should have said, ‘Edgar’s on the roof , but I have called the fire department to get him down.’ And tomorrow when I called, you could have said the firemen were having trouble getting Edgar down, but you were hopeful they would succeed. Then when I called the third time, you could have told me that the firemen have done their best, but unfortunately Edgar had fallen off the roof and was at the veterinarian’s (兽医站). Then when I called the last time, you could have said that although everything possible had been done for Edgar, he had died. That’s the way a sensitive man would have told me about Edgar. And, oh, before I forget,” James added, “how is mother?” “Oh,” Herbert said, pausing for a moment, “She’s on the roof.”

In some countries, students may have to take out a bank loan (贷款) to pay for tuition fees. However, not in Australia. There, students get help from HECS-HELP (Higher Education Contribution Scheme-Higher Education Loan Program). HECS-HELP is a loan system in which the government covers part or all of the tuition. It pays directly to the university on the student’s behalf. HECS is an Australian invention. Since it was introduced in 1989, it has been copied in other countries including Britain, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Thailand. “It’s one of the best things about Australia,” exclaimed Justine Davies, 26, an Australian girl. “Without it, I simply wouldn’t have been able to get tertiary (三等的) education. It makes university education in reach of everybody who wants it.” Davies said she paid only about A$400 each term for her tuition which was “several thousand dollars a year”. One HECS-HELP advantage is that students don’t have to begin repaying until their income is above a certain amount (A$38,148 in 2006-2007), according to the government website. So, a person making A$39,000 in 2006-2007 would pay 4 percent of their income, or A$1,560. The size of repayments rises with income. If the person’s income falls below A$38,000, the repayments stop until they are gainfully employed. 44. The aim of HECS-HELP is to _____.

A. help students get a higher score B. make everybody receive university education C. improve students’ ability of earning money D. make students live a better life 45. Which of the following countries does NOT carry out HECS-HELP?

A. students needn’t pay off the loan from the government B. students don’t have to repay until they get a certain income C. it will help students to get a good job D. it is widely carried out all over the world

47. If a person’s income is A$35,000 in 2007, the repayment should be _____. A. A$1,560 B. A$1,650 C. A$1,400 D. zero

for parents. They raise their children and educate them to be responsible citizens. They give love and care. These two days offer an opportunity to think about the changing roles of mothers and fathers. More mothers now work outside the home and more fathers must help with childcare.

These two special days are celebrated in many different ways. On mother’s Day, people wear carnations. A red one symbolizes a living mother. A white one shows that the mother is dead. Many people attend religious services to honor parents. It’s also a day when people whose parents are dead visit the cemetery(grave). On these days families get together at home as well as in restaurants. They often have outdoor barbecue for Father’s Day. These are days of fun and good feelings and memories. Another tradition is to give cards and gifts. Children make them in school. Many people make their own presents. These are more valued than those bought in stores. It’s not the value of the gift that is important, but “the thought that counts”. Greeting card stores, florists, candy makers, bakers, phone companies and other stores do lots of business during these holidays.

I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the
