When Lily Ebert was around 4 years old, her mother, Mrs.Ebert gave her a tiny gold pendant(吊坠). When she was 14, her elder brother hid it playfully, along with a couple of pieces of their mother’s jewelry, inside the heel(鞋后跟)of their mother’s shoe. The pendant still has a tiny mark from where it was hit by one of the nails.
It was late 1944, and because of the Second World War, the Eberts were being forced to give up any objects of value and fled from place to place. They firstly were forced to live in the refugee(难民) camp in their hometown. Then Lily Ebert, together with her family, was led into a dark, airless cattle truck with 70 or 80 others.
The small man waiting as they came off the train was Dr. Josef Mengele, and the place was Auschwitz. With one movement,he sent people to the right or left. Her mother and brother were sent left, straight to what the survivors later found out was the gas chamber(毒气室),and never came out.She and her remaining two sisters were sent to the right.
To Lily Ebert, the pendant and her mother’s jewelry accompanied her just like her mother, shining her darkest days. The refugee camp’s supply of wooden shoes ran out. Then, when the heel wore away,
Lily Ebert hid her pendant and other jewels inside her daily piece of bread. If she had been caught, she would have been killed immediately. But she took the risk, because they were the only things her mother left her. After the war, Lily Ebert gave her mother’s jewelry to her sisters. She continues to wear the pendant to this day.
“Not only did I survive,” said Lily Ebert, sweetly and humorously,“but my jewelry that they didn’t want me to keep, survived with me. I face up to the experience now.”
24. Why did Lily Ebert’s brother hide the pendant in the heel? A.To keep it safe. B.To make a joke. C.to possess the pendant. D. To have a mark on it. 25. What can we learn from paragraph 3 ?
A.Lily Ebert and her sisters were sent to hospital. B.Dr. Josef Mengele was arrested finally. C.Most people died on the way to the station. D.Mrs. Ebert and her son were killed.
26. What did Lily Ebert in Auschwitz regard the pendant and the jewelry as ?
A.The only things to guard her. B.Supplies in the darkest days. C.Her last connection to her mother. D.Her hope to be reunited with her family. 27.What do Lily Ebert’s words convey? A.She can look at the past positively. B.She still remembers her mother’s jewelry. C.She has learnt much from the sad experience. D.She will miss her family in a reasonable way.

Nature will provide a key warning sign just before the Yellowstone volcano’s eruption(爆发),according to a surprising documentary(纪录片).
The supervolcano, located in Yellowstone National Park in the US, has erupted three times in history:2.1 million years ago, 1.2 million years ago and 640,000 years ago.Scientists have previously warned how they may have as little as two weeks to prepare a removal(搬迁) before an earthquake occur. However, despite predictive technology, nature could prove to be the most valuable indicator of a coming eruption. YouTube channel Underworld produced a mini-series called“What If Yellowstone Erupted Tomorrow ?”, providing an understanding of what could happen.
Referring to an eruption, the documentary stated:“Before the eruption, there would be serious warning signs.Powerful earthquakes would be evident from unusual behavior from animals. This would be a big clue even before the ground began to swell.Eventually one of the earthquakes would break the layer of rock that holds the magma(岩浆)in.Flights would then be grounded in the US and maybe even the world-life would come to a stop.
Yellowstone National Park holds a wide variety of wild animals, including bison, bears, sheep, mountain goats and many more. The last time Yellowstone erupted, 2,500 times more volcanic material was produced than in the 1980 eruption of Mount St Helens.
