Passage 1
When giving presentations, it is common practice to encourage audience to get involved by taking the form of questions from the audience. A good deal has been written discussing the advantages and disadvantages of various approaches to handling these. 16
One approach is to take questions when they arise. In the event of receiving too many questions, the presenter may move the presentation on by offering to continue the discussion later. 17 Those who aren’t will simply have to wait.
18 A danger here is that too much time may be wasted on questions and, as a consequence, important parts of other main points have to be edited out. The audience may also confuse the presenter by asking about points that he or she intends to cover later in the presentation.
If so, mid-point questions can be discouraged by signaling that you would prefer questions at the end. If you take this approach, however, it is important to bear in mind that when you get to the end, it may take a little time for people to reflect on what they have heard and to formulate a question. 19 . To overcome this, it is useful to have a chairperson who is prepared to ask the first question.
20 In that case, the safest response is to tell the truth. Then the rest of the audience may appreciate your honesty. It may also be possible to move the attention away from the questioner by asking other audience.
A. Another potential problem is unfriendly questioners who ask the kind of questions they know will be difficult to answer.
B. A statement such as “I will come back to this point at the end” should keep most people happy. C. Another approach is to ask for questions after each main point has been addressed. D. It is a good idea to be aware of the traps that this type of questioners try to set. E. However, my intention here is simply to present the most common approaches. F. There is even the possibility that an embarrassing silence may ensure. G. Seeking a question can be an effective way of moving the session on.
Passage 2
For Ruth, Friday isn’t just another workday. It is the day when she can wear a sweater and casual trousers instead of business suit. 16 “It is a real treat. It puts us in good mood and winds the week down.” Ruth has joined thousands of workers who happily change from jackets, ties, and dresses to jeans, polo shirts, and sweaters on Fridays.
Why dress-down Friday? Today, dressing casually on the job is a way to show your company is in style. Another contributor is faxes, voice mail and email, which have reduced public contact. 17
However, even though dressing down is popular, the trend is controversial. Some workers remain strongly opposed. “You have got all the time in the world to dress down when you retire.” declared one woman. 18 “We had some very important guests on a Friday a few months ago.” says another worker. “These people dressed in navy suits. Our people dressed way down. I thought it was embarrassing. It sent the wrong message about our company.”
19 Some experts think it will go away one day. As long as the trend continues, though, dressing casually can cause a little confusion in the workplace. Business people aren’t sure what to wear, and many people just put on whatever they feel like in the morning. 20 They believe dressing down at work is one of the signs that the society is lowering its standards. Authors of Dress for Success say psychological changes occur when people dress up and what you wear affects what you do, your performance, and your attitude. A. Will the dress-down trend last? B. Will dressing casually become popular?
C. The casual dress trend worries some fashion professionals.
D. It is when she feels more confident and gets ready for next promotion. E. She loves the day away from her usual dressy suits and high-heeled shoes. F. Others worry that dressing casually lowers an employer’s professional image.
G. With fewer out-of-the-office meetings, people are dressing less to impress and more for comfort.

Passage 3
If you are thinking about redecorating the home, you are probably searching about interior (室内的) decoration ideas. Redecorating presents a great chance to reflect your personality by displaying your style and interests. It will be easy to redecorate the home if money is not a restriction. 16 Here are some tips on how to do so:
Search some magazines. You can get dozens of home interior decoration ideas from countless magazines and TV programs. Some programs tend to show less costly interior decoration ideas. 17 It's a good way of comparing different styles. Here you can make distinction between broad styles, country, contemporary, etc.
Fond of primitive style. If you are fond of primitive or traditional style, warmer colors are the best for the room. These colors go with all kinds of cloth of old style and wooden furniture. 18
Modern style. If you like modern styles, use brighter colors instead of white and off white. Home decoration of these styles includes minimum disorder and a lot of free space and light. Leather furniture matches the room: white or black with contrasting throw cushion (靠垫) per seating place. 19
20 This often occurs anyway, especially if the people give you furniture or you inherit (继承) the same. If you wish to combine different pieces of furniture from different styles, you need to bridge a gap between them. This can be done easily with materials like throw pillows, wall hangings and carpets. A. A white one on a black sofa suits here.
B. There is nothing wrong in mixing two styles.
C. Another effective and affordable option is by surfing the internet. D. The combinations and possibilities in the first decoration are endless.
E. Autumn colors go well to produce warm, friendly and pleasant atmosphere. F. Nevertheless, the question for most is how to redecorate the home within limited budget. G. The walls tend to have one or two pieces of wall art rather than 6 to 10 of the older time. Passage 4
May the first is an important date in the college admission process in the United States. This is the last day for high school seniors to accept or reject offers of admission in the fall. But according to a recent report, there is a great change. Acceptance rates at the top colleges this year were lower than ever. 16
These days, college applicants are applying to more colleges because online and common applications make the process easier. 17 On the other hand, deciding students for top colleges to accept can be difficult because it takes much time. Students may not like being put on waiting lists. Also, common colleges work more to get the students they accept to accept them. Some colleges hold visiting days that offer a chance to attend classes and stay overnight. Some universities send gifts. 18
For many families, the most important thing colleges can do is show them the money, especially this year; the weak economy makes parents nervous. 19 The recent problems that spread from the housing market to credit markets have even affected student’s loans. So lately, top schools have to spare lots of money to increase their financial aid for students. 20 The Education Department expects the number of high school graduates to start to go down. This will happen as the last of the children of the baby boom generation finishes high school. The number is not expected to start rising again until 2024. A. What contributes to it? B. But top colleges ignore them. C. They cannot afford college as planned. D. But a mistake can be costly if it happens. E. It can mean several acceptances to choose from. F. They have international students who know English. G. Besides, top colleges are facing changes in the population.

Caring for a loved one can be stressful, and that stress can have great influence on a caregiver's personal health and well-being(幸福). It's necessary for a caregiver to know about his/her discomfort. 16 It's the kind of tiredness you can't fix with a single good night's sleep and it's often the result of long-term stress.
Caregiving burnout looks different in different people. But generally, caregivers with burnout might feel very tired and feel uninterested in communicating with people or activities they used to enjoy. 17
If you're worried you're burnt out, be honest about it with yourself and others. 18 When you're talking to someone about your burnout, tell how you're feeling and what you suspect is the driving force behind it. What's more, do avoid blame. After all, the reality might be more complex.
19 When you write out your to-do list or look at your calendar, think about what tasks you really need to do on your own and what you can let go of. Keep it in mind that asking for support isn't failure. Moreover, you can participate in a caregiver support group so that you can get a chance to talk through some of the challenges you're experiencing. 20 Most importantly, do take good care of yourself so that you can take care of the patient. A. Talk to yourself to know about caregiving burnout and get rid of it. B. Meanwhile you can learn from others who are facing similar struggles. C. It is often said that the best way to get to the bottom of a hard problem is to sleep on it. 16 A new study forthcoming in the journal Psychological Science may have the answer.
A team of researchers led by Kristin Sanders of Northwestern University designed an experiment to test whether cueing music associated with unsolved brain teasers during sleep increased people's ability to solve those same brain teasers the next morning. 17
\awake,\ 18 \Over the course of the two experimental sessions, the researchers found that participants were 55 percent more likely to solve puzzles on their second try when the corresponding sound clip was surreptitiously played while they slept. 19 And solve rates for both spatial(空间的; 占据空间的) and verbal puzzles increased when cued during sleep.
The authors conclude, \demonstrating for the first time that targeted reactivation of puzzle memories during sleep improves problem-solving the following morning,we add to a growing literature recognizing sleep as useful for both strengthening and reorganizing memory .\

One of the great benefits of being able to record sound is to make books available for listening. With the appearance of audio recordings, many people were able to hear literary classics read aloud. Audio books are, of course, books read aloud and recorded to be listened to on some kind of player. As sound technology has changed, audio books have changed, as well. 16 Now, books are also available on audio tape or CD.
Talking books are books created for people who have sight problems. Some of these talking books often need special players to be used. Many visually damaged people are able to receive players for free. 17
CD technology has caused great changes in the talking book industry, since more data can be written on a single disc. 18 So the visually damaged person has a multi-use machine. 19 Some are even read in the form of a play, in which different actors take the parts of the characters in the book. They may also have sound effects or music to help improve the listening experience.
Some book clubs have started offering audio books as part of their services.
