With her withered (因病萎缩的) legs and a bag of bones, Zhang Junli looks more like a sickly teenager than a 39-year-old. She has chronic arthritis (慢性关节炎), an uncommon condition that had paralyzed (使瘫痪) her by the time she was 9.

For the past three decades she has been staying in bed, but despite being just able to lift a paintbrush, she has spent that time perfecting her art. Zhang has created thousands of watercolors, hundreds of oil paintings and has even written two books.

Born in a village in 1978, she first showed symptoms (症状) of the condition at age 6. “One day, when I was 6 years old, I woke up and had great pain in all my joints (关节),” Zhang said. Due to her condition, regular schooling was not possible. So she stayed at home, in bed, and learnt painting by herself. Zhang's love of art was

what kept her going and eventually pushed her toward her future career. “I have loved painting since childhood, it makes me calm at heart and my pain even seems reduced while painting,” she said. By watching online videos, reading books and copying the works of Western art, Zhang was able to study on her own how to paint in oils. In 2,000 hours, she has created more than 200 oil paintings.

Her online store “Lily's Easel” opened in February, 2017 on social networking app WeChat and she sold her first painting on the second day, for 360 yuan. In the first two months, she sold dozens of paintings and also started to receive customer orders.

Still, her physical condition worsens day by day and she is mentally prepared for the end. “I hope to have more time every day. I just want to have painted for 10,000 hours. That is my dream,” she said.

He lived his whole life as a poor man. His art and talent were recognized by almost no one.He suffered from a mental illness that led him to cut off part of his left ear in 1888 and to shoot himself two years later. But after his death, he achieved world fame. Today, Dutch artist Van Gogh is recognized as one of the leading artists of all time.

Now, 150 years after his birth on March 30, 1853, Zundert, the town of his birth, has made 2003 “The Van Gogh Year” in his honor. And the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, home to the biggest collection of his masterpieces, is marking the anniversary with exhibitions throughout the year. The museum draws around 1.3 million visitors every year. Some people enjoy the art and then learn about his life.

Others are interested in his life, which then helps them understand his art.

Van Gogh was the son of a pastor. He left school when he was just 15.By the age of 27, he had already tried many jobs including an art gallery salesman and a French teacher. Finally in 1880, he decided to begin his studies in art.

Van Gogh is famed for his ability to put his own emotions (情感) into his paintings and show his feelings about a scene. His style is marked by short, broad brush strokes (绘画笔法).“Instead of trying to reproduce exactly what I have before my eyes, I use color more freely, in order to express myself more forcibly,” he wrote in a

letter to his brother in 1888.

Van Gogh sold only one painting during his short life. He relied heavily on support from his brother, an art dealer who lived in Paris. But now his works are sold for millions of dollars. His portrait of Dr.Gacher sold for $ 89.5 million in 1990. It is the highest price ever paid for a painting. “I think his paintings are powerful and the brilliant color in them are attractive to people,” said a Van Gogh's fan.
