Module 1 Basketball

A

[2024·南昌模拟]When I was five or six years old, I remember watching TV and seeing other children suffer in other parts of the world. I would say to myself, “When I grow up, when I can get rich, I will save kids all over the world.”

At 17, I started my career here in America, and by the age of 18, I started my first charity organization. I went on to team up with other organizations in the following years, and met, helped, and even lost some of the most beautiful souls, from six-year-old Jasmina Anema who passed

away in 2010 from leukemia (白血病), and whose story inspired thousands to volunteer as donors, to my grandmother, who lost her battle with cancer in 2012, and her death is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF). We're all human. And we all just want a chance: a chance at life, a chance in education, a chance at a future, really. And at CLF, our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one. People make it seem too hard to do charity work. The truth is, you don't have to be rich to help others. You don't need to be famous. You don't even have to be college-educated. But it starts with your neighbor, the

person right next to you, the person sitting next to you in class, the kid down the block in your neighborhood. You just do whatever you can to help in any way that you can. And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart. My grandmother always used to say, “If you've got a dollar, there's plenty to share.”

And today, I want to challenge each of you to make a commitment to help one person, one organization, one situation that touches your heart.

句中“that touches your heart”为that

1.What did the author want to do at a young age? A.Watch TV. B.Grow up quickly. C.Become wealthy. D.Help other children.

根据第一段中的第二句“I would say to myself,‘When I grow up, when I can get rich,I will save kids all over the world.’”

2.What directly caused the author to create and develop the CLF? A.A six-year-old kid's request.

B.Her grandmother's death of cancer. C.Many volunteers' inspiration.

D.Other organizations' encouragement.

根据第二段第二句中的“to my grandmother, who lost her battle with cancer in 2012,and her death is the very reason and the driving force behind the Clara Lionel Foundation (CLF)”可知,在2012年,祖母不敌癌症病魔而去世,这促使作者成立了克拉拉·莱昂内尔基金会(CLF)。

3.What does the underlined word “one” in Paragraph 2 refer to? A.A chance. B.A task.

C.A life. D.An organization.

根据第二段的最后一句“And at CLF,our mission is to impact as many lives as possible, but it starts with just one”可知,在克拉拉·莱昂内尔基金会中,我们的任务是尽可能影响更多的生命,但这个任务从影响一个人的生命开始。根据该句中的“as many lives as possible”,结合“but... just one”可知,画线词one

指代“a life”,故C项正确。

4.What does the author suggest people do in the last paragraph? A.Do little things to help those around them. B.Work hard to get a college education. C.Challenge their friends to offer help. D.Do charity work whoever you are.

根据第三段中的第五句“But it starts with your neighbor, the person right next to you,the person sitting next to you in class, the kid down the block in your neighborhood”可知,慈善帮助可以从帮助你的邻居开始,帮助你身边的人开始,帮助上课时坐在你旁边的人开始,帮助你家附近街区上的小孩开始。

[2024·贵阳适应性考试]When the weather's hot, do you enjoy a glass of Brad's Drink while watching your TV made by Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering, and surfing the web using a search engine called BackRub? No? Neither do I. That's because all these companies have changed their names.

Brad's Drink is now Pepsi. The mouthful that was Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering has become, simply, Sony. And BackRub is now known as Google. Though I must admit, the idea of a back massage does sound good right now!

Joking aside, choosing the right name for your start-up is a serious

matter. Think of the case of a small Canadian company called Research In Motion, who in 1998 had just developed a high-tech mobile phone that

could send emails.

They were torn between names like MegaMail and ProMail. Then they sought the help of consulting firm Lexicon, who specialize in brand names. They had other ideas. They brainstormed words connected to enjoyment and freshness. Someone said “strawberry”. Then someone else suggested “blackberry”.

Lexicon's boss added two capital letters, and there you have it: BlackBerry was born. Since then it has sold over 33 million handsets to customers around the world. Would it have sold as well if it was called MegaMail? Who knows?

Recently, BlackBerry sales have been overtaken by Android phones and Apple's iPhone. Lexicon's founder David Placek is a big fan of simple brand names like those Apple chooses: the iPhone. They took a household word and by putting one letter in front of it, it ends up being game changing.

So, for all you entrepreneurs (企业家) out there, make sure you allow time to develop a catchy and memorable name. Think about what makes your company different. What's your USP Maybe you can reflect that in your name.

What about you? What would you call a company if you had one?

Think of the case of a small Canadian company called Research In Motion, who in 1998 had just developed a high-tech mobile phone that could send emails.

5.Which of the following is the original name of BlackBerry? A.Brad's Drink.

B.Tokyo Telecommunications Engineering. C.BackRub.

D.MegaMail and ProMail.

根据第四段第一句“They were torn between names like MegaMail and ProMail”可知,黑莓的原名是MegaMail和ProMail,故选D。

6.What is Lexicon?

A.A consulting company. B.A handset company. C.A drink company.

D.A telecommunication company.

根据第四段第二句“Then they sought the help of consulting firm Lexicon, who specialize in brand

7.What is Lexicon good at?

A.Giving proper names to persons. B.Giving proper names to a brand. C.Making Android phones.

D.Making its company different. 根据第四段第二句“Then they sought the help of consulting firm Lexicon, who specialize in brand names”可知,Lexicon是一个专门给品牌起名字的咨询公司,故选B。

8.What would be the best title for this passage? A.The Art of Designing B.Apple's iPhone

C.The Art of Naming D.Research in Motion

根据第一段最后一句“That's because all these companies have changed their names”,并结合全文的内容可推知,本文主要讲的是给公司或产品起名字的重要性,即“起名字的艺术”,故选C。

Talking to yourself may seem a little shameful. According to the well-known saying, talking to yourself is the

first sign of madness.

__1__. Talking to ourselves, whether out loud or silently in our heads, is a valuable tool for thoughts. Far from being a sign of madness, self-talk

allows us to plan what we are going to do, manage our activities, and even regulate our emotions.

__2__. You are very likely to hear him/her talking to himself/herself: offering himself/herself directions and giving voice to his/her frustrations. Psychologists refer to this as private speech that is spoken but directed at the self. We do a lot of it when we are young.

As children, according to the Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky, we use private speech to regulate our actions in the same way that we use public speech to control the behavior of others. __3__, we don't abandon this system — we internalize (使内在化) it. Psychological experiments have shown that this so-called inner speech can improve our performance

on tasks ranging from judging what other people are thinking to sorting images into categories. __4__. One recent study suggested that self-talk is
