What does the word \your language? Although people usually know what the word means it often has no exact
translation. It's not surprising really, because the idea of home varies from country to country, and from person to person. A home is more than a roof and four walls. It's the cooking, eating, talking, playing and family living that go on inside, which are important as well. And at home you usually feel safe and relaxed.
But it's not just that homes look different in different countries, they also contain different things and reveal different attitudes and needs. For example, in cold northern Europe, there's a fire in the living room or kitchen and all the chairs face it. In the south, where the sun shines a lot and it's
more important to keep the heat out, there are small windows, cool stone floors and often no carpets. We asked some people about their homes. How often do people move house in your country?
\ten years or so.\
— Cheryl, Boston, USA
What are typical features of homes in your country?
\bedrooms and living rooms. But we don't often have balconies (阳台). The weather isn't warm enough!\ — Pat, Exeter, England

52. You can ______ at home according to the passage.
A. cook, talk, and play games B. eat, play, and teach students C. swim, eat, and make friends D. do nothing
53. Why is it important to keep the heat out of the houses in southern Europe? A. Because they want to breathe fresh air outside. B. Because there's a fire in the living room.
C. Because they wear heavy clothing all day long. D. Because the sun there shines a lot.
54. How often do people move home in the United States? A. Every year. B. Every five years or less.
C. Every ten years or so. D. They don't move until they die. 55. Which one is true according to the passage?
A. People in Britain seldom have balconies because it's so hot outside. B. \
C. Although homes look different in different countries, they have the same needs. D. Houses in northern Europe always have big windows and cool stone floors.
B) 阅读下列短文,然后回答问题、完成句子或表格。
B
I saw my first tiger in a national park in India. It was a young male and he was drinking at a
waterhole. He raised his head slowly and stared at us for a full minute. Then he turned his back on us and disappeared quickly into the jungle.
Twenty years ago, the tiger was in trouble. In India its numbers were around 1,800. Then the
Indian government launched Project Tiger, which set up many national parks all over the country. In Africa, the most important species in danger is the elephant, the world's largest living land mammal. In 1979 there were 1.3 million elephants there. Ten years later, numbers were down to 600,000. Conservationists warned that the species could be extinct by the end of the century. But slowly the situation has changed: the demand for ivory has fallen sharply, and now the number of elephants is increasing rapidly; there are many more than there were sixteen years ago. On the other side of the world, the grey whales of Baja California nearly disappeared during the last century. Fortunately, the US Marine Mammals Protection Act of 1972 saved them. The grey whales recovered quickly. Today there are perhaps 20,000 and these gentle giants are now worth far more alive than dead.
Today, wildlife is good for the tourist trade. And tourism — provided it takes only pictures and leaves only footprints — is good for the national parks. If wildlife can always be treated in this way, animals can live and thrive in the world.

Can a person make it rain? Many people believed that Charles Hatfield could. In the early 1910s, Mr Hatfield traveled to many places bringing rain to farms and cities that suffered from drought. For 30 years, people considered him the greatest rainmaker in North America.
One of Mr Hatfield's most amazing rainmaking accomplishments happened in southern California in 1916. Mr Hatfield offered to give the city of San Diego a hand with its water problem. He
planned to create enough rain to fill the lake behind Morena Dam near the city. Since the time the dam was built, the lake had never been more than half full, but the lake could hold 15 billion gallons of water if it were full. Filling the lake would help the city of San Diego with its constant
