一、阅读理解(共17小题;共34.0分)
A
On April 22, 2012, I jumped from an airplane 13,000 feet up. What was the purpose? It was just to overcome my fear of heights.
Seven years ago, when I went to France, I couldn't go up the Eiffel Tower because I was afraid. It seemed so high. I wanted to overcome my fear, so I could dare to go skydiving(跳伞). At first, I didn't think I could, but I finally made it.
I don't think that I could have jumped out of that plane without the encouragement of my wonderful friends and classmates—Yucel and Tatiana! It was a pity that we couldn't jump together. However, as we prepared to jump, there was something special among us—a special bond.
I made a reservation(预定) to go skydiving one week before the day of my jump. I felt nervous during the whole week, kind of blue; but mysteriously. When it was the moment to jump from the airplane, I didn't feel any fear… I just jumped! That was awesome! Awesome!
There was a whole new world and the beautiful sky. I had never seen such a beautiful world!!! First, I felt an awful acceleration(加速度), and then I felt like I was lying in the air… like a bird! I think it was an illusion, but it was wonderful!
The oncoming wind blew me strongly. It was amazing! After about 50 seconds of freefall, the parachute opened. When I landed on the ground, I felt a lack of oxygen. It was difficult to breathe in during the freefall.
I was so glad that I survived and was able to overcome my fear! Everything went well! If possible, I want to jump again. My first jump is an outstanding memory for me.

Paper-cut is a very special visual art of Chinese handicrafts. One saying is that it originated from the religious ceremony or offering sacrifices(贡品). The ancient people cut papers into animals or people. They either buried them with the dead or burned them on the funerals, wishing that things that paper stood for could be with the dead. Later, they were used during festivals to decorate gates and windows. After hundreds of years' development, now they have become a very popular means of decoration among country folk, especially women.
It is easy to learn about cutting a piece of paper but very difficult to master it with perfection. Beginners need only a knife and paper. For craftsman, they need knives and gravers of various types to make complicated(复杂的) patterns. It can be one piece of paper or many pieces. Simple patterns can be cut with a knife. For complicated patterns, people first pasted the pattern on the paper and then used various kinds of knives to make it. No mistake can be made during the process otherwise the work would fail.
Paper cutting covers nearly all topics, from flowers, birds, animals, legendary people, figures in classic novels, to types of facial make-up in Peking opera. Paper cutting has various styles in different parts of China.
In the past, women living in the countryside gathered in their free time to make paper cutting, which is a way to judge their skillfulness. As society develops, fewer and fewer people learn this skill while there are some who still regard it as a profession. At present, there are factories and associations for paper cutting in China. Good hobbies for kids can be any type of activity that is beneficial for their over-all growth and has been proven to help them later in life, including self-confidence and any skills that they might learn. When choosing hobbies, parents should remember not to push kids too hard, otherwise they might give up before they really try the hobbies. Also you should give your kids the right to choose hobbies by themselves.
Good hobbies are something that will grow with your kids, stretching(使发挥全部本领) and challenging them enough to keep them interested, but do not take them away from their school work. Instead, good hobbies can help to improve their homework.
Also some hobbies are appropriate only for certain age groups, and can be very good for developing specific areas. For example, some musical instruments are age-specific. Older kids who can read might enjoy the guitar or the piano, while younger ones might enjoy playing the toy drums and singing along.
Take my own experience as a working parent, my daughter started a new hobby in 6th grade. It has turned out to be a good thing for her self-confidence and mental ability. So trying a wide variety of hobbies, maybe one at a time, can be a good thing for everyone.
