On a beautiful Sunday morning, I was enjoying coffee happily in a cafe. Suddenly I felt a soft hand on my back and heard someone saying, “Hi, John! How is everything going?” I looked back, and saw a young woman who looked familiar (熟悉的) smiling at me. But I couldn’t remember where we had met.
The young woman also ordered a cup of coffee, so I asked her to join me. Very soon, her story began to become clear in my memory.
Ten years earlier, it was December, and the weather was terribly cold. A beautiful girl called Katherine was travelling home late that night. A heavy snow had arrived that afternoon, and by midnight, the road was covered by deep snow. Her car was stuck in the snow just down the road from my house.
She walked to my house for help. I helped her pull her car out of snow and up to the street where the snow had been cleaned away.
This was a normal happening here during the winter. I couldn’t count the times someone had helped me to pull my car out of snow. However, it was a memorable experience for her. She was only eighteen at that time, and she said she was very afraid. No one wants to be stuck in the snow at night.

Most of us learn at primary school that there are seven continents, but the next generation of kids may add one more to that list. According to a recent paper published (发表) in the Geological Society of American Journal by a group of
researchers, Zealandia is a new continent that is hidden under the ocean.
Zealandia has an area of about five million square kilometres, which is larger than all the countries in the European Union. Most of this large area is covered by water, but its highest part already has its own name: New Zealand. The small country is the only part of Zealandia that isn’t under the water, but the paper’s writers want the huge land to be recognized by the whole world as its own continent. “The scientific value of classifying (归类) Zealandia as a continent is much more than just an extra name on a, list,” the researchers wrote in their paper.
In 2006, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) decided that Pluto (冥王星) was no longer a planet, 76 years after its discovery. Scientists argued that it no longer met the requirements of a planet. So it was renamed a “dwarf planet”, meaning that a lot of books, models and museum exhibits all over the world had to be renewed. But will the world take the same notice of Zealandia? The best way to tell is to keep an eye on our textbooks. ()34. What’s the difference between Zealandia and other continents? A. A school has relaxed its dress rule to allow students to wear slippers in the classroom and parents love it. A 10-year study showed that children who learned with no shoes on were more likely to behave better and get good grades. Now Findern Primary School in Derby is trying this way.
Sarah Robinson, a parent of a five-year-old girl, said, “Everybody loves it, and it makes the classes so much more relaxing. We have to leave for school earlier to make time for the children to change into their slippers. Emelia absolutely loves to wear them, and they make her feel much more comfortable to sit. The health of their feet is so important, and not having to wear shoes all day could really help.”

She said, “One of our teachers tried them for a day and so far it seems to have made a big difference. The children are really happy to do it. Even though everybody is well behaved, it seems that the children feel more comfortable. The idea isn’t a gimmick (噱头),and there are serious educational reasons behind it. My husband and I took part in a voyage on the Yangtze River with a guide from Viking. Sadly, during the voyage, heavy rains upriver flooded the Yangtze above Chongqing and created dangerous situations for all boats sailing through the Three Gorges area. The flood water had to be guided into the Three Gorges Dam’s spillway (泄洪道). It stopped ships, travelling in either direction from entering the locks (水闸) and stopped all boats from going up or down the river. At that time, timing was everything and our boat did not reach the Three Gorges Dam before its locks were closed because of the flooding.
Ending the voyage in Yichang was a disappointment to both my husband and me. We had read Simon Winchester’s book before taking the trip. So we were looking forward not only to seeing the beautiful scenery of the Three Gorges area, but also to exploring some of the towns along the river that Winchester had introduced us to.
Though we met the unexpected thing, we believed that Viking tried to provide everyone on the boat with many other experiences. We paid a visit to the power station of Gezhouba Dam, took a walk to Shennong Stream, and also took a walk to the Three Gorges Dam Project site.
I would like to believe that most of the people in our tour group knew the idea that when life hands you a lemon, you make lemonade. Unluckily, we heard unfriendly words from visitors of the Ancient Kingdom of Siam tour group while we were on the boat from time to time. And those unfriendly words clearly continued after we parted (分开) in Yichang. It seemed to us that their anger was caused more by their hope of getting a refund (退款) from Viking. It seemed that they refused to admit the efforts this company had made and the extra costs caused by flooding that was out of control.
Both my husband and I believed that the Viking had done an excellent job in making the trip great. ()42. What was the problem that the writer and her husband faced during the voyage? A. They couldn’t pass the Three Gorges Dam.
B. Their trip had to be longer because of the flooding. C. They must go down the river instead of going up.
D. Traffic of sailing through the Three Gorees area was heavy. ()43. Why did the writer mention the activities in Paragraph 3? A. To show she had a great time.
B. To show Viking organized other activities. C. To tell people what to do during the voyage. D. To say the voyage was a disappointment.
()44. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 4 mean? A. Everything can be very useful.
B. We can’t get everything at one time.
C. Life isn’t always as good as we expected.
D. We should take full advantage of what we have.
()45. Which of the following would the writer agree with? A. Viking should give the tourists refunds. B. The tourists shouldn’t complain to Viking. C. Viking was a very disappointing company.
D. The voyage along the Yangtze River was disappointing. 第二卷非选择题(25分)
