September 23 usually means another new season has started,but what exactly you should call that season depends on where in the world you are and whom you ask.In Great Britain, the third season of the year usually has only one name:autumn.But if you go across the Atlantic,you’ll find that people use both fall and autumn when referring to this time of year,making it the only season in the English language with two widely accepted names.So what is it about the season that makes it so special?

According to Dictionary.com,fall isn’t a modem nickname that follows the more traditional autumn.The two terms are actually first recorded within a few hundred years of each other.

Before either word appeared,the season between summer and winter was known as harvest,or h?rfest in Old English.The word is of Germanic stock and means“picking”“plucking’’or“reaping”,all act of gathering and preserving crops before winter.

In the 1500s,English speakers began referring to the seasons separating the cold and warm months as either the fall of the leaf or the spring of the leaf,or fall and spring for short.Both terms were simple,but for some reason,only spring had staying power in Britain.By the end of the 1600s,autumn,from the French word autompne and the Latin autunmus, had overtaken fall as the standard British term for the third season.
