Christmas was near a season that we took seriously in our house. But a week or so before December 25th,my father would give each of his children $20.That was in the 1970s,and $20 was quite a bit of money.
But I saw it differently. My father trusted me to have the smartness to spend money wisely. Even better, he gave me the means of spending it. On a very basic level, my father was giving me a shopping spree(狂欢). And he also made me take charge of my own fun, trusting my ability to manage money and making me feel like a grown-up. He didn’t buy me Sherlock Holmes, but he gave me the chance to walk into the Book store and choose it by myself, so it was like a gift from him.
My mother had a gift for giving me what I needed, usually right at the time I needed it most.When I was 25,I failed in being an adult on my very first try. I had quitted my previous job but had no new one. But when my mother paid me a visit, I put on a good show, telling her I had started my own company.
My mother knew that I was trying hard. It was not until she left that I noticed an envelope thick with cash at the foot of my bed. She knew how desperately I needed it. She knew that had she just shown up with groceries, or offered to pay my rent, she would have made me feel much worse. The cold, hard cash meant she was helping me. And she wanted to give me space to fix my life and preserve my dignity. My mother and father both did the same thing. One was giving me the chance to make my own decisions, and the other was giving me a second chance when those decisions had cost me dearly.

David Beckham was born on May 2, 1975, in London. At an early age, Beckham showed his own promise as a footballer, winning the Bobby Soccer Schools National Skills competition at 11.His talent soon caught the notice of Manchester United team officials, who asked him to try out for the club’s youth league. By the age of 16, Beckham had left home and was playing for Manchester United’s training division. Two years later he made the club and by 1995, he was a full-time starter.
Beckham wasted little time making a splash on the English soccer field. The talented goal scorer was named the Professional Footballers’ Association Young Player of the Year in 1997.A year later, he was one of the leading faces of England’s World Cup team.
On the field, Beckham didn’t miss a beat. In 1999, he led Manchester United to the Premier League title, the FA Cup championship, and the Champions League title. Thanks to the last minute free kick against Greece in 2001, England qualified for the 2002 World Cup. That same year, Beckham signed a three-year $22 million contract to remain with Manchester United. But Beckham’s time with Manchester United proved to be shorter than anyone thought. In 2003, he was acquired by Real Madrid in a shocking deal, which brought to light Beckham’s growing

division with Manchester’s manager, Sir Alex Ferguson. Spanish soccer fans were thrilled to have their opponent join their team.
In 2007, the soccer great moved across the Atlantic to sign a reported five-year, $ 250 million deal with the L. A.Galaxy.
