Without proper planning, tourism can cause problems. For example, too many tourists can crowd public places that are also enjoyed by the inhabitants of a country. If tourists create too much traffic, the inhabitants become annoyed and unhappy. They begin to dislike tourists and to treat them impolitely. They forget how much tourism can help the country’s economy. It is important to think about the people of a destination country and how tourism affects them. Tourism should help a country; keep the customs and beauty that attract tourists. Tourism should also advance the wealth and happiness of local inhabitants.

Too much tourism can be a problem. If tourism grows too quickly, people must leave other jobs to work in the tourism industry. This means that other parts of the country’s economy can suffer.

On the other hand, if there is not enough tourism, people can lose jobs. Businesses can also lose money. It costs a great deal of money to build large hotels, airports, air terminals, first-class roads, and other support facilities(配套设施) needed by tourist attractions. For example, a major international class tourism hotel can cost as much as 50 thousand dollars per room to build. If this room is not used most of the time, the owners of the hotel lose money.

Building a hotel is just a beginning. There must be many support facilities as well, including roads to get to the hotel, electricity, sewers to handle waster and water. All of these support facilities cost money. If they are not used because there are not enough tourists, jobs and money are lost.

21. Which of the following do you think has been discussed in the part before this selection? A. It is extremely important to develop tourism. B. Building roads and hotels is essential. C. Support facilities are highly necessary. D. Planning is of great importance to tourism.

22. The underlined word “inhabitants”(in Paragraph 1) probably means “________”. A. tourists

B. passengers

C. population

D. citizens

23. The author thinks it is good for local people to know that tourism will ________.

A. waste a lot of money B. weaken their economy C. help establish their customs

D. help improve their life

【答案】21-23 DDD

Holidaymakers who are bored with baking beaches and overheated hotel rooms head for a big igloo. Swedish businessman Nile Bergqvist is delighted with his new hotel, the world’s first igloo hotel. Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors, but soon the fun will be over. In two weeks time Bergqvist’s ice creation(作品) will be nothing more than a pool of water. “We don’t see it as a big problem,” he says. “We just look forward to replacing it.”

Bergqvist built his first igloo in 1991 for an art exhibition. It was so successful that he designed the present one, which measures about 200 square meters. Six workmen spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow froze, the base was removed. “The only wooden thing we have left in the igloo is the front door,” he says.

After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success. With no windows, nowhere to hang clothes and temperatures below 0℃, it may seem more like a survival test than a relaxing hotel break. “It’s great fun,” Bergqvist explains, “As well as a good start in survival training.”

The popularity of the igloo is beyond doubt. It is now attracting tourists from all over the world. At least 800 people have stayed at the igloo this season even though there are only 10 rooms. “You can get a lot of people in,” explains Bergqvist. “The beds are three meters wide by two meters long, and can fit at least four at one time.”

24. Bergqvist designed and built the world’s first igloo hotel because ________. A. he believed people would enjoy trying something new B. he wanted to make a name for the small town C. an art exhibition was about to open D. more hotel rooms were needed

25. When the writer says “the fun will be over”, he refers to the fact that ________. A. hotel guests will be frightened at the thought of the hard test

B. Bergqvist’s hotel will soon become a pool of water C. holidaymakers will soon get tired of the big igloo D. a bigger igloo will replace the present one

26. When guests leave the igloo hotel they will receive a paper stating that ________. A. they have visited Lapland B. they have had an ice-snow holiday C. they have had great fun sleeping on ice D. they have had a taste of adventure 27. We can infer that ________.

A. there are 10 igloos with no air-conditioner, no windows and nowhere to hang clothes B. all the doors are made of wood

C. Bergqvist’s first igloo built in 1991 for an art exhibition was the one at present D. the igloo hotel is not a place for relaxation 【答案】24-27 ABDD

25.推理判断题。根据本句 “Built in a small town in Lapland, it has been attracting lots of visitors, but soon the fun will be over.” 以及下文的内容 “Six workmen spent more than eight weeks piling 1,000 tons of snow onto a wooden base; when the snow froze, the base was removed.” 可知,这些东西都是由冰做的,所以当气温提高的时候,这些东西都会融化,成为一堆水。故B正确。

26.细节理解题。根据文章倒数第二段 “After their stay, all visitors receive a survival certificate recording their success.” 选D正确。

27.推理判断题。根据倒数第二段的it may seem more like a survival test than a relaxing hotel break可推出这间旅馆不适合放松,故选D。

Children start out as natural scientists, eager to look into the world around them. Helping them enjoy science can be easy; there’s no need for a lot of scientific terms or expensive lab equipment. You only have to share your children’s curiosity(好奇). Firstly, listen to their questions. I once visited a classroom of seven-year-olds to talk about science as a job. The children asked me “textbook questions” about schooling, salary and whether I liked my job. When I finished answering, we sat facing one another in silence. Finally I said, “Now that we’re finished with your lists, do you have questions of your own about science?”

After a long pause, a boy raised his hand, “Have you ever seen a grasshopper(蚱蜢) eat? When I try eating leaves like that, I get a stomachache. Why?”

This began a set of questions that lasted nearly two hours.

Secondly, give them time to think. Studies over the past 30 years have shown that, after asking a

question, adults typically wait only one second or less for an answer, no time for a child to think. When adults increase their “wait time” to three seconds or more, children give more logical(符合逻辑的), complete and creative answers.

Thirdly, watch your language. Once you have a child involved in a science discussion, don’t jump in with “That’s right” or “Very good”. These words work well when it comes to encouraging good behavior. But in talking about science, quick praise can signal that discussion is over. Instead, keep things going by saying “That’s interesting” or “I’d never thought of it in that way before”, or coming up with more questions or ideas.

Never push a child to “think”. It doesn’t make sense. Children are always thinking, without your telling them to. What’s more, this can turn a conversation into a performance. The child will try to find the answer you want, in as few words as possible, so that he will be a smaller target for your disagreement.

Lastly, show: don’t tell. Real-life impressions of nature are far more impressive than any lesson children can learn from a book or a television program. Let children look at their fingertips through a magnifying glass(放大镜), and they’ll understand why you want them to wash before dinner. Rather than saying that water evaporates(蒸发), put a pot of water to boil and let them watch the water level drop. 32. According to the passage, children are natural scientists, and to raise their interest, the most important thing for adults to do is ________. A. to let them see the world around B. to share the children’s curiosity C. to explain difficult phrases about science D. to supply the children with lab equipment

33. In the last sentence of the first paragraph, the word “lists” could best be replaced by ________. A. any questions

B. any problems

C. questions from textbooks

D. any number of questions

34. According to the passage, children can answer questions in a more logical, complete and creative way if adults ________.

A. ask them to answer quickly

B. wait for one or two seconds after a question C. tell them to answer the next day

D. wait at least for three seconds after a question

35. In which of the following paragraph(s) does the author tell us what to say to encourage children in a science discussion?

A. The second and third. B. The fourth and fifth. C. The fifth and sixth.

D. The seventh.

How to avoid traffic jams

36 A by-product of this is that traffic jams can lead to increased accidents as there are more cars, with more people trying to get to their destinations. Although it’s impossible to avoid traffic jams altogether, there are some tips you can follow to reduce the amount of time on the road.

37 You can listen to the radio for traffic news, or check on the Internet to get up-to-the-minute information on traffic. If the route you intended to take is heavy with traffic, you can choose an alternative.

Alternatively, you could look for a different route permanently(永久地). Most traffic jams occur on busy roads. Using country roads could see you avoiding a lot of traffic. Although the distance you may have to travel is further, it can work out quicker.

38 Many new car stereo systems(车用立体声音响系统) are equipped with a radio data system by which you can hear the traffic announcements. This way you can get the latest traffic information and change your journey at a moment’s notice.

Try traveling at a different time. Most traffic jams usually occur during rush-hour traffic, so try to avoid this period if possible. Some jobs offer flexible working hours so that you can travel to work outside of rush hour. Some even offer telecommuting where you can work from home so as to avoid commuting altogether. 39 40 The easiest way to avoid traffic jams is to take buses or the Underground instead of driving your own cars. Not only will you avoid traffic jams but you will most likely be saving money as the cost of motoring rises.

A. Check for traffic jams before you leave.

B. There are many ways in which you travel.

C. Set your car radio to receive traffic bulletins(新闻简报). D. Use public transport alternatives where available. E. You can never expect to avoid traffic jams in modern times. F. With more and more cars on the road, traffic jams are very common. G. Talk to your manager and decide what options are available to you. 【答案】36-40 FACGD
