Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for—its stadium and theatres, its shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii’s people. They do not see them because Pompeii has no people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2000 years.
Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22000 people. It lay at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for centuries, so the people of Pompeii felt safe. But they were not.
In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, and a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ash began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii was buried under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.
For centuries, Pompeii lay buried under stone and ash. Then, in the year 1861, an Italian scientist named Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. Slowly, carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug. The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79. There were streets and fountains, houses and shops. There was a stadium with 20000 seats. Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects, which tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Many glasses and jars had some dark blue colour in the bottom, so we know that the people of Pompeii liked wine. They liked bread, too; metal bread pans were in every bakery. In one bakery there were 81 round, flat loaves of bread. A type of bread that is still sold in Italy today. Tiny boxes filled with a dark, shiny powder tell us that women liked to wear eye-makeup.
Ginseppe has died, but his work continues. One-fourth has not been uncovered yet. Scientists are still digging, still making discoveries that draw the tourists to Pompeii.
21. Why do large numbers of people come to Pompeii each year?
A. To visit the volcano. B. To shop and eat there. C. To watch sports and plays. D. To see how Pompeiians lived. 22. Why had so many Pompeiians remained by volcanic Mount Vesuvius? A. The city nearby offered all kinds of fun. B. The area produced the finest wine in Italy. C. Few people expected the volcano to erupt again. D. The mountain was beautiful and covered with grass.
23. Why did the city uncovered look almost the same as it had looked in AD 79? A. Because Ginseppe and his men dug it slowly and carefully. B. Because the city was buried alive and remained untouched.
C. Because scientists successfully rebuilt the city with everyday objects. D. Because nobody had lived in the city ever since the volcano erupted.
24. What do we know about the Pompeiians who lived 2000 years ago? A. They lived more or less the same as Italians now do.
3
B. They liked women wearing all kinds of makeup.
C. They enjoyed a lazy life with drinking and eating. D. They went back to Pompeii after the eruption in AD 79.

We were late as usual. My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn’t manage, he had to ask me for help at the last moment. So now we had an hour to get to the airport. Luckily, there were not many cars or buses on the road and we were able to get there just in time.
We checked in and went straight to a big hall to wait for our flight to be called. We waited and waited but no announcement was made. We asked for information and the girl there told us that the plane hadn’t even arrived yet. In the end there was another announcement telling us that passengers waiting for Flight LJ 108 could get a free meal voucher (餐券) and that the plane hadn’t left Spain for technical problems. We thought that meant that it wasn’t safe for the plane to fly. We waited again for a long time until late evening when we were asked to report again. This time we were given free vouchers to spend the night in a nearby hotel.
The next morning after a bad night because of all the planes taking off and landing, we reported back to the airport. Guess what had happened while we were asleep! Our plane had arrived and taken off again. All the other passengers had been woken up in the night to catch the plane, but for some reason or other we had been forgotten. You can imagine how we felt.

It’s 2035. You have a job, a family and you’re about 40 old. Welcome to

your future life.
Getting ready for work, you stand in front of the mirror, “Turn red,” you say. Your shirt changes from sky blue to deep red. Tiny preprogrammed electronics are rearranged(重新设置) in your shirt to change its color. Looking into the mirror, you find it hard to believe that you are 40. You look much younger. With amazing advances in medicine, people in your generation may live to be 150 years old. You’re not even middle-aged.
As you go into the kitchen and prepare to pour your breakfast cereal(谷物) into a bowl, you hear: “To lose weight, you shouldn’t eat that,” from your shoes. They read the tiny electronic code on the cereal box to find out the nutrition details. You decide to listen to your shoes. “Kitchen, what can I have for breakfast?” A list of possible foods appear on the counter as kitchen checks its food supplies.
“Ready for your trip to space. You ask your son and daughter.” In 2005 only specially trained astronauts went into space — and very few of them. Today anyone can go to space for day trips or longer vacation. Your best friend even works in space. Handing your children three strawberries each, your add, “The doctor said you need these for space travel.” Thanks to medical advices, vaccination shots(疫苗注射) are a thing of the past. Ordinary foods contain specific vaccines. With the berries in their mouths, the kids head for the front door.
It’s time for you to go to work. Your car checks your fingerprints and unlocks the doors. “My office. Autopilot(自动驾驶),” you command. Your car drives itself down the road and moves smoothly into traffic on the highway. You sit back and unroll your e-newspaper. The latest news downloads and fills the viewer. Looking through the pages, you watch the news as video films rather than read it. 29:What changes the color of your shirt?
A.The mirror. B.The counter. C.The shirt itself. D.The medicine. 30:How do the shoes know that your shouldn’t eat the breakfast cereal? A.By pouring the breakfast into a bowl. B.By listening to the doctor’s advice.
C.By testing the food supplies in the kitchen. D.By checking the nutrition details of the food. 31:The strawberries the children eat serve as . A.lunch B.vaccines C.breakfast D.nutrition 32:How is the text organized?
A.In order of time. B.In order of frequency.
C.In order of preference. D.In order of importance.

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested in spelling. However, this is not the case. No school I have ever taught in has ever ignored spelling or considered it unimportant as a basic skill. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely and confidently in writing
