My doorbell rings. On the step, I find the elderly Chinese lady, small and slight, holding the hand of a little boy. In her other hand, she holds a paper carrier bag.

I know this lady. It is not her first visit. She is the boy’s grandmother, and her daughter bought the house next door last October.

Her daughter, Nicole, speaks fluent English. But she is now in Shanghai, and her parents are here with the little boy. Nicole has obviously told her mother that I am having heart surgery soon, so her mother has decided I need more nutrients.

I know what is inside the bag—a thermos with hot soup and a stainless-steel container with rice, vegetables and either chicken, meat or shrimp (虾), sometimes with a kind of pancake. This has become an almost-daily practice.

22. Where can you go if you want to see European homes in the 17th? A. The Family Room. C. Of Gods and Glamour.

23. What can children do at Curious Corner? A. Hold a birthday party. C. Communicate with artists.

Communication between us is somewhat affected by the fact that she doesn’t speak English and all I can say in Chinese is hello. Once, she brought an iPad as well as the food. She pointed to the screen, which displayed a message from her daughter telling me that her mother wanted to know if the food was all right and whether it was too salty. I am not used to iPads, so she indicated I should go with her to her house. Then, she handed the iPad to her husband and almost immediately I found myself looking at Nicole in Shanghai and discussing her mother’s cooking and salt intake. Instantly, tears filled my eyes.

“Your mother just can’t be bringing me meals like this all the time,” I insisted. “I can hardly do dishes in return.”

“Oh, no, Lucy.” Nicole said. “Mum doesn’t like western food. Don’t worry about it; she has to cook for the three of them anyway, and she wants to do it.”

The doorbell keeps ringing and there is the familiar brown paper carrier bag, handed smilingly to me.

I am now working on some more Chinese words — it’s the least I can do after such display of kindness.

“Thank you” is, of course, the first one. Somehow, it seems inadequate.

25. Why does the elderly Chinese lady visit Lucy regularly? A. She learns to speak English from Lucy. B. She teaches Lucy to cook Chinese food. C. She cares about Lucy’s state of health. D. She wants to make friends with Lucy.

26. What’s the purpose of Nicole’s mum taking an iPad to Lucy’s home? A. To show Lucy a film. B. To communicate with Lucy. C. To ask Lucy how to use it. D. To teach Lucy how to cook.

27. What does Lucy mainly want to express in this passage? A. Her thanks to the Chinese family. B. Her preference for the Chinese food. C. Her love of the advanced technology. D. Her affection for the Chinese language.

The “24 solar terms” was firstly used in China. It was created thousands of years ago on the basis of practical needs of agriculture. Ancient Chinese people used it to guide agriculture production, special climate signs and even healthy living tips. Last year, the 24 solar terms was added to UNESCO’s world intangible cultural heritage list. Now, it has been brought to life thanks to a creative designer from Southwest China’s Guizhou province.

On the eve of this year’s Qingming Festival, Shi Changhong released(发布) his version of re-produced and pack-aged characters for each solar term in the form of “moving art” of gifs (动画).

Since their first release on Zccol on March 29, the gifs have won great praise among the general public and quickly swept social media with millions of hits during the festival period.

To maximize publicity, Shi released his work in three forms: video, cartoon and picture, while, the background sounds add to the brilliance.

“When I watch the short video, I can strongly feel the Chinese-style elements(元素) hidden in them. And it is really cool to refresh Chinese traditional culture in such a unique way.” WeChat user Xiao Feifei said.

“It is really a comfort to me to see so many people like my latest work. To be honest, it would really surprise me if the work does not awaken a sensation among Chinese people. The 24 solar items is a concept that sums up the essence(精髓) of Chinese wisdom. However, only a small percentage of people know all the names or the correct order of those terms. My intention is to increase Chinese people’s self awareness to learn more about our traditional fine culture. Actually, the 24 solar items work is only a part of my whole design program ‘Charm China’, which I started over a year ago.” Shi told China Daily.

28. What do you think the underlined word “Zccol” refers to?

A. A magazine.

B. A website. D. A daily newspaper.

C. A radio broadcast.

29. What is the purpose of the passage?

A. To introduce a creative designer.

B. To introduce the origin of the 24 solar terms. C. To introduce a design program “Charm China”. D. To introduce the 24 solar items work. 30. What can we know from the text?

A. The background sounds of the work make the video more attractive. B. It really surprised Shi Changhong to see so many people like his latest work. C. Most old people know all the names of the correct order of the 24 solar terms. D. The 24 solar items work by Shi Changhong was added to UNESCO’s heritage list. 31. Which part of the newspaper does the text probably belong to?

A. Travel.

B. Business.

C. Culture.

When people argue about whether coffee is good for health, they’re usually thinking of the health of the coffee drinker. Is it good for your heart? Does it increase blood pressure?Does it help you concentrate? However, coffee affects the health of the human population in other ways, too.

Traditionally, coffee bushes were planted under the shade of taller trees. However, more and more farmers in Latin America are deforesting the land to grow full-sun coffees. At first, this increases production because more coffee bushes can be planted if there aren’t any trees. With increased production come increased profits.

Unfortunately, deforesting for coffee production immediately decreases local wildlife habitat. Native birds nest and hide from predators(捕食者)in the tall trees and migrating(迁徙) birds rest there.

Furthermore, in the long term, the full-sun method also damages the ecosystem because more chemical fertilizers(化肥) and pesticides(杀虫剂) are needed to grow the coffee. The fertilizers and
