Review some expressions learned in Unit Seven (5 minutes); 2. Section I: Talking Face to Face First ask the students to discuss the value of making some dialogues about the cuisine and recipes to warm them up (5 minutes); 3. Read and explain the Sample cookery, food and culture. (10 minutes); 4. The students practice the dialogues by imitating the pronunciation and intonation of the speakers on the tape, master some useful expressions, and produce some dialogues as required (25 minutes); 5. Section II: Being All Ears (43minutes) Pre-listening: predict the content of each listening material with all possible information; While-listening: let the students listen to the dialogues and the passage at least one time before doing the exercises; ask them to take notes; Post-listening: do some oral English activities and written work. These steps aim to help the students cultivate good listening strategies. 6. Unit Eight
Cookery, Food and Culture
I. Objectives:
By the end of this unit, the students should be able to
1) Read and discuss cookery, food and culture in English,
2) Learn some expressions used in making dialogues about the cookery, food and culture and write their own recipe,
3) Comprehend the two passages and master the useful expressions in them, and 4) Finish the exercises by themselves or with some help.
II. Introduction
Lead-in(导入): First, the students are asked to discuss the topic—cookery, food and culture. Then their opinions are written down on the blackboard. Finally, the introductory remarks will be made by the teacher as follows:
In our every day life, knowing and understanding the details regarding cuisine and recipes are very important for our health. Do you know how to cook and what you can cook? Do you enjoy cooking and what do you think of it? In \
following the examples, dialogues and other tasks, you’ll learn many English words and phrases about cuisine and recipes both in written form and orally that you can often use in your everyday life. Please try your best to remember and practice them
III. Teaching Procedures:
Section I. Talking Face to Face
Step 1. Presentation: Read the following two Samples of Recipes Sample 1 Yogurt (酸奶)
INGREDIENTS (成分): 1) a pack of milk 2) a little yogurt INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Heat milk and boil for one minute. 2) Allow it to cool to about 40℃.
3) Add a little YOGURT as a starter to it. 4) Pour the mixture into little pots.
5) Leave them in a warm place OVERNIGHT!
6) Put the pots into the fridge to cool and make them tastier. 7) Serve with brown sugar or honey.
Sample 2 Almond Ice-cream (杏仁冰激凌)
INGREDIENTS:
1) a one-liter (公升) package of good quality commercial ice-cream 2) two or three tablespoons of liquid honey 3) four tablespoons of brandy (白兰地)
4) a generous handful of well-toasted almonds INSTRUCTIONS:
1) Set the ice-cream out and leave at room temperature for a short time to soften it.
2) Don't let it get too soft. 3) Stir in the honey.
4) (Note: The honey will not blend in completely.) 5) Add brandy and stir till it is well blended. 6) Stir in almonds.
7) Put into the freezer for three hours till it is solid. 8) Serve in small coffee cups.
