An abseiling device comprises an annular spool 4, rotatable around a central axis and having an inner surface and an annular gear 5 around its periphery with gear teeth facing toward the central axis. A line is wound around the spool, with one end fixed to the spool and the other end comprising attachment means. The device also comprises a shaft 6 which is co-axial with the central axis and
comprises a driving member (8, Fig 3) arranged to rotate with the shaft. Attached to the shaft is a centrifugal brake
comprising brake pads 9 for applying a breaking force to the spool and which are able to slide radially relative to the driving member, and a brake gear 7 which is attached to and rotatable with the shaft 6. When the spool is at rest the brake pads extends around over 80% of the
circumference of the inner surface of the spool. A compound gear 10 is also
provided which comprises a first gear 11
