Become a Volunteer and Make a Difference
The First Tee, as an outstanding youth development organization, is always searching for good people that want to volunteer at one of our many Pittsburgh area locations.
We’re looking for You!
Nationwide, we currently have more than 3,700 coaches signed up with The First Tee as well as volunteers. But you don’t have to be a golf professional or even a good golfer. With The First Tee Coach Program, we provide the training you need.
Developed with input from leading experts in the field of positive youth development, our program focuses on making participants stronger and more confident through decision-making and exploring options, inspiring the golfers of tomorrow to look to the future, set goals, and unlock their potential.
We also need more volunteers to make The First Tee possible. Opportunities include:
Assistant Coach: assist in our weekly golf clinics. All that we request is that
you make a 7-week commitment (one day per week), for 2 hours each week. Each clinic is led by one of our trained staff members who creates a written lesson plan for our volunteers to follow.
Database Manager: input data entry of participants, volunteers, and community
relation records and update chapter information for Home Office and community relations. The database manager is expected to update the data a minimum of every other week.
Equipment Manager: organize and sort donated equipment, get rid of unfit equipment,
and arrange equipment for distribution to participants at least once a week.
Greeter: register participants, hand information to parents, greet visitors,
answer phone and provide general program information.

The sun was rising when Daryl’s delivery truck reached the highway. This was the best time of day to drive, when the roads were wide open and empty. He felt sure he was going to make it to Los Angeles before midnight. It looked like it was going to be a good day.
Then he saw it, a large lump in the middle of the road. Daryl often passed dead animals on the roadside but he knew then this was something different. He slammed on his brakes and the truck screeched to a halt.
The lump was a girl. He tried shaking her awake but she wouldn’t move, so he picked her up and carried her to the side of the road. At least she wouldn’t be run over there.
Now she was someone else’s problem. He had to make it to Los Angeles by midnight and didn’t have time to be a here. He climbed back into his truck but as he looked in his mirror and saw the girl lying still by the side of the road, he knew he couldn’t leave her. Daryl put her into his truck and drove to the next town.
An hour later he pulled up at the police station. After explaining what had happened, he prepared to leave, only for the policeman to say that he needed to make a report. Daryl knew this would take several hours, but he had no choice. There was no way he’d get to Los Angeles on time now.
Three hours later the report was done and the girl had recovered somewhat. She explained that she had fallen on the highway, weak from hunger, but could remember nothing else. She also thanked Daryl for saving her life. Daryl told her that he had been happy to help, but as he got back into his truck he knew his boss wouldn’t be.

Can you figure out someone’s name just by looking at him or her?
The answer may not be a definite “yes”, but a study by the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israel, found that you would at least have a clue, since people with certain names tend to share similar facial appearances.
For example, if someone is named Bob, he’s likely to have a round and joyful face, while someone named Tim tends to have a narrower face and a more serious look.
People have long been associating names with certain cultural expectations, which may be responsible for the study’s results. For example, a woman named Katherine is usually considered to be more reliable than a girl named Bonnie. Previous studies also found that people with traditionally African-American names such as DeShawn and Jamal are more likely to be seen as dangerous and violent by their teachers and are less likely to be hired in jobs.
These stereotypes(固定模式)have become so widespread that they’ve even affected how people look at themselves. In fact, people tend to subconsciously(下意识地)change their own personalities to fit into these stereotypes—Katherines may try hard to be trustworthy and Bonnies may care less about the mistakes they make.
“We develop the personality that other people expect us to exhibit,” said lead researcher Youat Zwebner, according to The Telegraph. In other words, it’s not that names change people, but people try to live up to their names.
And our faces may even change over time, based on these stereotypes. “Usually, we think that faces are very fixed but now we show that they’re not,”
- 3 -
C. He knew that someone else would help. D. He worried the police would blame
D. Worried that his boss
the study’s co-author Ruth Mayo told UK’s iNews.
According to Mayo, the use of different facial expressions can allow people to develop different looks. “If you smile a lot, you have different wrinkles around your eyes and your mouth from if you frown a lot,” she said. 28. Why did the author use the names Bob and Tim as an example? A. To prove the influence of names on our emotions. B. To present the cultural expectations of certain names. C. To show the correct method of guessing someone’s name. D. To explain the possible connections between names and looks.
29. Which of the following are considered cultural stereotypes by the author? a. A boy name Tim tends to be cautious. b. A boy named Jamal tends to be violent. c. A boy named DeShawn appears dangerous.
d. A girl named Bonnie is likely to be seen as joyful. e. A girl named Katherine is usually considered trustworthy. A. abe B. ade C. bcd D. bce 30. Which of the following would Yonat Zwebner probably agree with? A. People’s faces become fixed as they grow into adults. B. The way people are expected changes their personalities.
C. People could change their personalities by using different names. D. People should focus on sound and meaning when choosing names. 31. What might be the best title for the passage? A. Appearance may affect jobs. C. Name may make looks.
D
B. Name can change people. D. Appearance can carry culture.
Why Mars (火星) is New Settlement
Is it possible to live on other planets? The United States government is taking a serious look at the moon and Mars as potential places for future human settlement. The moon could serve as a training ground for later journeys to Mars. Currently, with Mars becoming the eventual long-term goal, serious questions exist as to whether the dangers of the settlement on the moon are too extreme and unnecessary.
One major reason the settlement on the moon is too dangerous is the difference between the atmosphere environment of the moon and Mars. Atmosphere is important because it protects humans and all other life from a continuous attack of radiation (辐射) caused by sources such as the sun. This radiation is especially dangerous to humans because it increases the risk of cancer and can negatively change DNA. The fact that the moon has no atmosphere can cause great harm to human beings. Although Mars’ atmosphere is significantly thinner than Earth’s, at least it has one and would create some sort of protective barrier for humans.
Another important characteristic necessary for human settlement is natural
resources like water, of which the moon is believed to have none. Mars, however, contains vast quantities of water ice, dry ice, and also snow. There is also sufficient evidence that water once existed at the surface of Mars and might return in the future

if the planet warms. With increased technologies, the potential for settlers to remain on Mars by being increasingly self-sufficient makes Mars a much more attractive goal as the space settlement than the moon. Future settlers will not only benefit from potential water on Mars; the planet is also rich in other natural resources such as oxygen, hydrogen, and minerals, which can be well used in productive ways. For example, hydrogen can be used as fuel, and it can be combined with nitrogen (氮气) to form new materials necessary for human settlement. Due to these advantages, Mars would be a more successful planet for exploration and settlement because it contains the basic resources necessary for humans to survive.
Since the environment of Mars is more similar to that of Earth and it contains resources necessary to help life exist, it should be the only option for any kind of long-term human settlement. The settlement on Mars would not only be a milestone in space but also an excellent chance for mankind to improve itself from past adventures on Earth and preserve and make the best use of the natural resources Mars has to offer.
32. According to Paragraph 2, the atmosphere on Mars would . A. change the DNA structure of humans B. measure the harmful radiation from space C. provide protection against dangerous effects D. cause humans to be exposed to serious illnesses 33. What can be inferred about water on Mars?
A. It is not present in a liquid state. B. It doesn’t exist in large quantities.
C. It will bring potential dangers to settlers. D. It can be easily changed into liquid forms.
34. The author believes that .
A. exploration of Mars takes great risk B. natural resources on Mars last forever
C. settlement on Mars is perfectly acceptable D. Mars is more suitable for settlement than Earth
35. Which of the following shows the development of ideas in the passage?
CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point (次要点) C: Conclusion
