二、阅读理解
根据短文内容从A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出一个最合适的答案填空,并在答题卡上将所选答案的字母涂黑。(本大题共15小题,每小题3分,共45分) Passage 1 Many of us believe that a person’s mind becomes less active as he grows old. But this is not true, according to Dr. Jarvik, professor of psychiatry at the University of California. She had studied the mental functioning of aging persons for several years. For example, one of her studies concerns 136 pairs of twins, who were first examined when they were already 60 years
'.
.
old.as Dr. Jarvik continued the study of the twins into their 70s and 80s, their minds did not generally decline as was expected. However, there was some decline in their psychomotor speed. This means that it took them longer to accomplish mental tasks than it used to. But when speed was not a factor, they lost very little intellectual ability over the years. In general, Dr. Jarvik’s studies have shown that there is no decline in knowledge or reasoning ability. This is true not only with those in their 30s and 40s, but with those in their 60s and 70s as well. It is true that older people themselves often complain that their memory is not as good as it once was. However, much of what we call “loss of memory’ is not that at all. There usually was incomplete learning in the first place. For example, the older person perhaps had trouble with hearing, or poor vision, or in lack of attention, or was trying to learn the new things at too fast a pace. In the cases where the older person’s mind really seems to decay, it is not necessarily a sign of decay due to ole age. Often it is simply a sign of a depressed emotional state.
11. According to Dr. Jarvik’s studies, middle-aged and older persons would expect to___________. A. lose no intellectual ability B. lose some reasoning ability C. lose some learning ability D. learn fewer new things 12. Mental decay due to aging is ___________. A. much more common than most people believe B. a fact that everybody knows C. only true of those over sixty D. much less common than most people realize
13. A long term study of 136 pairs of twins showed that___________. A. their minds became a bit more active as they grew older B. memory was not as good as once it had been C. could not reason as fast as they used to D. they lost a little ability to reason over the years
14. According to the passage, all the following are cause of “incomplete learning” EXCEPT___________. A. speed reading B. poor hearing C. bad eyesight D. lack of attention 15. What we call mental decay is usually a sign of ___________. A. old age B. a low-spirited state C .a worsening state of bealth D. nervous tension
Passage 2
First aid is the kind of medical care given to a victim of an accident or a sudden injury before trained medical help can arrive. First aid treatments are generally easy to carry out. They can be taught to people of all ages. Learning them is important. Knowing how to treat someone in an emergency can mean the difference between life and death. Each year, thousands of people die after eating or drinking poisonous substances. Experts say most accidental poisonings take place in or near the home. Most poisonings result from substances commonly used at home. They include medicines, insect poisons or cleaning liquids. Signs of poisoning include a sudden feeling of pain or sickness bums in or near the mouth, or an unusual smell coming from the mouth. Health experts generally advise poison victims to drink water or milk. They say, however, to never give liquids to someone who is

Passage 3
Parents with an adopted (收养的) child wonder whether, when and how to tell their child that he or she is adopted. They also want to know if there are special problems for an adopted child.
Child psychiatrists (精冲病学家) recommend that the child be told about the adoption by the adoptive parents. Children should be told about their adoption in a way that they can understand. There are two different views on when a child should be told about the adoption. Many experts believe the child should be told at the earliest age as possible. This approach provides the child an early opportunity to accept and integrate the concept of being “adopted”. Other experts believe that telling a child too early may confuse the young child who can’t really understand the matter. These experts advise waiting until the child is older. In either case, children should learn of their adoption from the adoptive parents. This helps give the message that adoption is good and that the child can trust the parents. If the child first learns about the adoption intentionally or accidentally from someone other than parents, the child may feel angry and does not trust the parents. and may view the adoption as bad or shameful because it was kept as a secret.
