13、 “Farm to table” is the name of an activity that encourages people to eat locally grown food. There is also a group that brings “table to farm”. This traveling group is called Outstanding in the Field. Its aim is to connect people to the land and to create a kind of restaurant without walls.
Jim Denevan got the idea for this kind of food service ten years ago. Jim Denevan’s brother is a farmer and he himself is a former chef. He thought the idea of a meal served right at the farm made sense, though not everyone agreed. “But I wanted to make the idea work, so I decided to cross the country—I went all the way across the United States and set the table in farms and ranches and on beaches, and all the places where food comes from.”
He recently prepared tables for more than a hundred people at Briars Farmstead in Virginia. He and his eight-member crew arrived the night before. Chefs from a local restaurant prepared the dinner.
Matt Szechenyi and his family operate Briars Farmstead. He said “This type of event connects us with a lot of enthusiastic people, people that will—we can form relationships with in the future. And this type of small farm business thrives on relationships.”
Guests bring their own plates to the meal. When they arrive, the farmer shows them around. “These are free-range chickens. We want them to eat as much pasture as possible because that’s the magic.” The tour of the farm ends at the dinner table. The meats in this five-course meal come from Matt Szechenyi’s farm. The vegetables and other ingredients come from nearby farms. Guests and local farmers sit together. Alex Bogel came with his family. He said “It is also especially wonderful to sit at a table this big with all these people. The sense of community is wonderful.”
Jim Denevan and his team have served almost thirteen thousand people. He plans to expand the operation.

14、 You put a blue lobster (龙虾) in boiling water, and a few minutes later, you take out a red lobster. Have you ever wondered why the lobster changes its color when it is cooked?
Scientists at Manchester University’s school of chemistry in the UK have an answer. They found that a chemical in the shell called astaxanthin (虾青素) causes the lobster’s color to change.
This chemical is red and is in the shells of both raw and cooked lobsters. But in raw lobsters, the redness of the astaxanthin is covered by the dark blue color of another chemical in the shell, crustacyanin (虾青蛋白).The darker color helps lobsters avoid enemies in the wild. And it is likely to have evolved (进化) by natural selection.
However, when heated, the structure of crustacyanin changes. This makes the red color of astaxanthin stand out.
This is similar to the changing colors of tree leaves in autumn. Leaves always contain the pigments that make them red, orange and yellow. But for most of the year, those pigments are covered by the bright green color of chlorophyll (叶绿素). In autumn, when the temperature cools and the sun’s light becomes weak, chlorophyll fades to make these warm-colored pigments visible (看得见的).
“It is a scientific curiosity (神奇), but it may also have important uses in the real world,” said John Helliwell, the lead scientist, to The Daily Telegraph. “It could help people know when food has been cooked properly.”
1.Whose color is red? A.Crustacyanin. B.Astaxanthin. C.Chlorophyll. D.Pigment.
2.Which of the following is TRUE? A.Raw lobsters have no crustacyanin.
B.Crustacyanin only exists in the shell of dead lobsters. C.Crustacyanin is a dark blue chemical. D.Astaxanthin can protect lobsters from enemies. 3.From Paragraph 6 we know that ______. A.pigment in leaves can protect trees from sunshine
B.chlorophyll disappears because of high temperatures C.pigments in leaves can be seen all year round D.chlorophyll fades when sunlight becomes weaker 4.What can we learn from the article?
A.Scientific studies can help people live a better life. B.No one knows why lobsters change their colors. C.US scientists discovered the chemical astaxanthin. D.Some animals change their colors with the seasons.

15、More and more people believe that technologies are great for learning. Today, such teaching tools as iPads are used in a lot of courses, including language, history and science.
Many teachers are supporters of using iPads in language learning. They say that students now have much more time for discussion in the classroom. Instead of spending valuable class time listening to texts or watching teaching videos, students can do this on their own and come to class prepared for discussion.
The teachers also say that iPads allow students to learn at their own pace. Some students might listen to a dialogue only once and understand it, so they can save time for doing other things. Other students, however, might need to listen to the same dialogue again and again to understand it. Using iPads is especially helpful to students who are learning a language at different paces.
The students who are using the new tool in some courses are also happy. They believe that using iPads is a more enjoyable way to learn (such as listening to stories and watching movies). The class has become much more interesting and creative.
There are other advantages for students. By using iPads, they can pay more attention to the material and learn more. Teaching notes are stored in their iPads and are easy to find. Some students spend more time studying now. “I can listen to my language material or watch teaching videos on the bus, instead of having to wait until I get home,” a student explained.
Many adults complain that technologies such as iPads are doing harm to students. They worry that students might use iPads to download teaching notes and use them to cheat during exams. Some believe that iPads may separate students from each other. If a student spends more time watching videos on an iPad, he will have fewer opportunities to have face-to-face communication with others.
However, technologies are already a part of most students’ day-to-day lives. As for cheating, teachers can ask students to hand in their iPads when they take exams. Education needs to make changes with the times as technology is playing an important part. We should look forward to a wonderful future when iPads and other technologies can add a lot to the classroom.
1.What does the express0ion “at their own pace” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
