When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, newspapers, or the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses. The drop in air pressure (压

力) produces an effect on small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators. People have found that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains. Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable (急躁的) and will fight over a piece of bread. Other birds chirp (叽叽喳喳) and sing just before a storm. It seems they know they won’t get another chance for an hour or two. Birds also look for safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to buildings. Pre-storm low air pressure makes the air so thin that birds have difficulty in flying. It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in the spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong directions, they may be flying ahead of a storm. By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.

Driving in the U.S. can be difficult to understand, not just because of all the rules and laws that drivers must follow, but also because of driving customs. Many people in the U.S. are really dependent on their cars to get to work and school. In fact, most American workers spend an hour driving to work each day. In order to drive in the U.S., you have to go to your local Department of Motor Vehicles first, and take a written test to get your learner’s permit. If you pass this test, you can practice driving, so you can pass a road test and get your license. The Department of Motor Vehicles has free booklets you can get to study for your learner’s permit. You can also get the information online and even take a practice written exam. To prepare for the road test, you can have a friend teach you to drive or pay to take classes at a driving school. You cannot, however, practice driving by yourself. If you are caught driving with only a learner’s permit, you can get into trouble with the law.

Once you get your driver’s license in one state, you can use it to drive in all of the states in America.

Wherever you drive, you will see signs posted along the road showing the speed limit. These numbers are not a suggestion. Generally, you can drive faster on a highway than on local streets. Local police use special equipment to discover your speed. If they discover you are speeding or driving over the speed limit, they can stop you and give you a ticket. You will have to pay a fine(罚款) which may be more than $100.

The lines painted on a road are not just to keep cars in their lanes. They send a message. For example, a double solid yellow line means that it is against the law to pass another car here.

6.In order to learn driving in the United States, you need . A. to have your own car B. to get a learner’s permit C. to have basic knowledge of a car D. to get proof(证明) of car insurance

7.During learning how to drive, you shouldn’t . A. read the booklets DMV provides B. have a friend teach you

C. take classes at a driving school D. drive alone

8.The underlined word \it\ . A. your learner’s permit

B. your driver’s license

4

C. the law D. the car

9.If you are caught driving over the speed limit, . A. your driver’s license will be taken away B. you will be given a warning

C. you will have to pay a fine $100 or more D. you cannot drive your car anymore

10.Which of the following is Not true according to the passage? A. Most Americans go to work in their cars every day.

B. If you only have a learner’s permit, you can’t drive it by yourself. C. When you get your driver’s license, you can’t drive on a highway.
