A new product called MarinaTex is expected to replace single-use plastic bags or containers one day. Its inventor Lucy Hughes won the 2019 James Dyson Award on November 13t. The new material is made by combining fishing waste and algae*, so it is edible. Even if it is eaten accidentally, there won't be any harm. Unlike plastic, MarinaTex breaks down in 4 to 6 weeks under normal conditions and
does not pollute the soil.
Hughes studied on it for her final year project at the University of Sussex and continued her research after she left the university. What made her work hard on it was the concern*about the situation of plastic in ocean waters. The United Nations said that 100 million tons of plastic waste ad already been left in the oceans. A report showed there would be more plastic than fish in the world's oceans by the year 2050.
Hughes also looked for ways to reduce the amount of waste from the fishing industry which produces about 50 million tons of waste worldwide each year, according to UN officials. Examining* fish parts left over from processing helped to give her the idea of a material that was useful and did not harm the environment. \the oceans already have had so many gifts for humans?\
