Ning Zetao has become China’s new swimming star due to his amazing performance at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon(仁川), South Korea. With already two gold medals in hand, the 21-year-old clocked 47.70 seconds in the 100m freestyle, setting a new Asian record. This result has been recognized by FINA as the world’s third best time this year, fast enough to have won a gold medal in last year’s Barcelona World Championships.“It is my first international event,” said Ning, who later won a fourth gold medal in Incheon. “I am happy that my results are pretty close to my personal best.”

Born in the central Chinese city of Zhengzhou,Ning entered the local team at the age of 11 and joined the navy team in 2007.He first caught people’s attention in 2009 when he finished eighth in the 200m individual medley(混合泳) at the National Games.

Nevertheless, Ning suffered from bone infection in both knees for a long time, which made him unable to train hard on his kicks. He also had an indigestion problem and had to eat “soft” food which is easy to digest. His poor stomach even made it impossible for him to complete week-long full time training. But the young swimmer never gives up. His idol is the great Russian swimmer Alexander Popov, who continued to win Olympic gold medals after he was stabbed(刺伤)on a street. Ning said, “He was a real fighter and I need to learn from him.”

Taken better care of by coaches and doctors, Ning can now train as normally as others. And that is why he can get today’s achievements. The gold medals at the Asian Games also boosted the confidence of the new swimming star, who hopes to enter the national team and compete for China in more international events. “Chinese male swimmers have never been placed among top eight in the short-distance freestyle,” he said. “I hope I can do it, just like what Sun Yang did in the mid-long distance freestyle.”

C. the Chinese swimmers have never got into the top eighth in the world event D. gold medalist as Ning is, he is not yet a member of National Swimming Team

C Alibaba started taking the lead in China by connecting big Chinese manufacturers with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allowed business to buy almost everything. Alibaba’s advantage wasn’t hard to judge: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards. Its market attracts 231 million active buyers, 8 million sellers, 11.3 billion orders a year — and Alibaba is just the middleman. It encourages people to use its markets — not charging small sellers a percentage of the sale. If you want a quick look into the influence of Alibaba on daily Chinese life, take my experience. I moved to Beijing a year ago and quickly got tired of visiting small stores across the crowded, polluted city of 20 million people in search of new electronics, bathroom furnishings, and anything else my wife wanted. “What exactly are you looking for? Why not try it? ” my Chinese teacher asked me one day. With that, my wonderful new relationship with Alibaba began.

Alibaba’s original business-to-business model now is second to consumer buying. Chinese retail(零售) buying makes up 80% of Alibaba’s profit, and leading that group is Taobao, with 800 million items for sale and the most unbelievable selection of things you’ll ever find. TMall.com is Alibaba’s other big site, where you can find brand name goods from Nike and Unilever near the lowest prices.

What I have a hard time explaining to friends and family back in the U.S. is how China has gone beyond traditional shopping — big-box retailers especially —in favor of online purchases on Taobao and a few other sites. In smaller towns than Beijing, where big retailers have not yet traveled, shopping online is shopping, and shopping is Taobao.

I have a list of some of my recent purchases on Taobao for a sense of how wide the marketplace is. Almost everything arrived a day or two after ordering with free shipping. I’m not even a big buyer, because I need friends to help me search the Chinese-language site. When I was searching my purchase history on my Chinese teacher’s iPad, which helps me buy goods, I looked through with great difficulty about 10 of her purchases for every one of mine.

27. Alibaba’s advantage mainly lies in .

A. its business-to-business service B. its big size C. its not charging small sellers D. its low price 28. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in the passage? A. Alibaba is of middle size among all the online sites. B. Alibaba will continue to develop.

C. Alibaba acts as a bridge between the buyers and sellers. D. Alibaba stands out as the best online site. 29. What can be inferred from the passage?

A. Alibaba’s business-to-business service earns more money than retail. B. Taobao has no obvious advantage over other similar online sites. C. TMall.com provides more profit than Taobao.

D. The author’s Chinese teacher is also an online purchase lover. 30. What is the passage mainly about? A. Shopping online in China is Taobao.

B. Alibaba influences people’s daily purchase in China. C. Shopping online goes beyond traditional shopping. D. How the author purchases online in China.

Just like children, baby animals spend countless hours at play. After studying animal play for many years, scientists recognize that young animal play is practice for adult behavior. Today this play is roughly divided into the following groups.

Locomotor play refers to the movements animals carry out in their play. Running, leaping, turning, and kicking are some of the most common examples of locomotor play. An adult deer may run, leap, and twist to escape its attackers. Play movements like these surely make young animals nimble. Someday these skills might help save their lives.

Moving forward slowly, attacking suddenly and biting are examples of predatory play that help young predators prepare for a life of running after and taking hold of other animals. Wild cats, wolves, and bears are predators. It is very common to see these young animals play this kind of games which sharpen their skills and teach them about their strengths and limitations.

For children, playing with toys is both fun and educational. It helps improve their hand and eye movements as well as develop hand skills to accomplish tasks. It is the same with animals. Young chimpanzees improve their hand skills while playing with sticks. Birds also play with things in ways that teach. Swallows drop and recover feathers in midair. Diving suddenly to catch the feathers is a good practice for catching flying insects.

Social play helps animals learn how to behave when they run into other animals. And it teaches animals about communication. An animal gives signals to let another animal know it wants to play. Many animals give signals by showing a \face is like a human smile; the animal holds its mouth in a relaxed and open manner. During play-fights, some animals may step backwards to signal that they are playing and not acting

seriously.

Until now, scientists have understood playful acts help prepare animals for their serious adult situations. But the numbers of playful species and examples of animal play are vast. The purpose of animal play may have meanings scientists have not discovered yet. 31. The main purpose of the text is to ______. A. ask us to take good care of wild animals B. encourage us to learn more about animals C. entertain us with interesting animal stories D. show us something about animal behavior

32. The underlined word \A. cruel B. swift C. curious D. strong

33. Which of the following belongs to predatory play? A. A deer runs, leaps, and turns. B. A chimpanzee plays with a stick.

C. A lion moves slowly and makes an attack suddenly. D. A dog holds its mouth in a relaxed and open manner. 34. Based on Paragraph 5, a \A. a type of signal between animals B. a name for a kind of animal play C. an activity that involves adult animals D. an action that is taught to another animal

Helping Students Find Their Writing Voices

One of the most frustrating things for writing teachers is reading papers that simply lack style. When all of the research has been completed and all of the sentences are structured well, but the paper still lacks some pizzazz(活力),it can be boring to grade. If you are searching for ways to help your students find their voices, why not try making students themselves the topic of the writing? 36

Who are you?

One of the most difficult questions for students to answer is “Who are you?” 37 In doing this, through writing, students will start to see their personalities differently and, hopefully, be able to add a feature to their writing.

Dear xxx,

38 Encourage them to write to a famous person they’ve always admired, and then the one they absolutely hate. Explore how their language changes between the two letters. When students know their audiences, it is much easier for them to add the kind of personality their audience wants to see. 39

When students write about what matters most to them, they will often give you the best writing you’ve ever seen. You’ll get those when you ask questions that hit home. When students have something to say about a given topic, it can be easier for them to get their ideas down and then work on their writing style.

From mind to paper.

The most valuable lesson students can learn is to write first, and edit later. Have students write for five minutes about their topics. If they can get their ideas down on paper, that’s 90% of the battle. 40 This can help them realize that, once they have the ideas down, the rest is just fine tuning(微调). Once they have this skill mastered, it’s easy for them to start adding their own personal voices to their papers.

A. What matters to you?

B. What style is taught in class?

C. When they write about themselves, students’ voices often shine through. D. Writing letters is a great way for students to explore their writing style. E. Have your students explore who they are and what makes them unique.

F. Voice is that magical quality which is able to make a creative writing idea sing! G. After that, have them edit these ideas into a really strong introductory paragraph.
