Consumption of the world’s resources (such as oil, fresh water, etc.) is increasing at a dangerous rate. What are the causes of this increased consumption? What can people do to reduce it? (2015/11/14)
Nowadays the world’s resources are being increasingly consumed to a dangerous level and the living space for human beings is becoming narrower than ever before. Many insightful people begin to get aware that it would be an impending calamity if we still remain indifferent to it.
To begin with, the rapid development of economy in some developing countries, such as China, India, etc., leads to the dramatic demands on energy and resources. It is generally known that technology and transportation are the prime power for economic growth. More and more advanced technologies contribute to the invention and application of more sophisticated energy exploiting tools and equipment and it in turn creates more convenient preconditions for companies to exploit the underground and offshore resources and finally make huge profits from those emerging industries. Lured by huge commercial benefits, some entrepreneurs forget their social duties, which have resulted in the excessive exploitation and unnecessary consumption of energy.
Secondly, there is yet no common sense or substantial cooperation among different governments in terms of how to reasonably develop and utilize energy resources. Nowadays the whole world is a “global village”, so the participation of international organizations becomes indispensable. Otherwise, energy consumption reduction and environmental protection would descend to an empty talk.
When it comes to the solutions, I am convinced that both the governments from developing countries and those from developed countries should enhance international exchange and cooperation, enacting more rigorous Public International Law to inhibit and reduce the excessive energy exploitation. Moreover, governments should encourage technological innovation and find cleaner alternatives which are less damage to the environment and more beneficial to human beings. With such joint efforts, the big blue planet would regain its beauty someday.
