Long Beach Comic Con at Long Beach Convention Center

Long Beach Comic Con (LBCC) is a celebration of comic books and pop culture that shows the extraordinary works of talented writers, artists, and creators of all types of pop cultures. LBCC packs in two days of movie screenings, an exciting exhibit floor with artists, live experiences, meets & greets, celebrity (名人) signings and more.

? An important message regarding the weapons policy at LBCC

In response to the growing concerns of attendees, guests, and exhibitors of LBCC, we have reread our prop (道具) weapons instructions and will be drawing up new rules to better make sure of the safety and peace of mind of all who attend.

Our primary policy change will be banning the use of any prop with the appearance of a gun. You’ll find the rest of our instructions are much as they were before with metal-bladed weapons, blunt weapons, prop weapons made of metal, wood, fiberglass, and glass not allowed on the scene.

Personal defence items like pepper spray are also forbidden. We urge cosplayers and fans to read over our instructions carefully and completely before coming to Long Beach Comic Con to avoid having to return items to your vehicle.

Please expect to have all approved prop weapons checked upon entry. Once approved, they must remain visible during your visit at the convention center.

With your assistance and cooperation, we will continue to keep all MAD Event Management conventions fun and safe for everyone.

Enjoy the show!

Are you tired of being left out while your so-called helper is just hanging out? Personally, it’s quite annoying. During a sixth-grade group project, my partner and had to plan and budget for a trip to Australia. In the beginning, he promised to do half of the work. I had just gone on and assumed he would keep his word, but unfortunately, the day before it was due, he told me he hadn’t done a thing. So all that night, I had to finish my half, as well as his. This was when I realized we couldn’t rely on anyone. I relied on him, but he dropped the ball.

You’d think that by now I would have learned from my previous experience, but no. Every year we have a band competition called solo (独奏) and ensemble (合奏). (This is a competition where you play a solo for several judges and they give you advice.) I had participated for the past two years and was eager to do it again. When the teacher asked me if I wanted to do it, I answered without hesitation. A week later, a list of names came out, giving Urination to individuals. At the end of the list, my name had not been called. So I raised my hand to ask about the mistake when she asked if I really wanted to go. This really led me to feel betrayed.

People aren’t always able to be relied on. Mostly you can only trust yourself to carry out what you want to do. 5. What do we know about the project mentioned in Paragraph 2?

2

A. It was not completed at last. B. It was done by the author alone. C. It was supposed to be done in Australia. D. It was too difficult for the author’s partner.

6. What does the underlined part he dropped the ball in Paragraph 2 probably mean? A. He didn’t make it.

B. He took a bad attitude. D. Ho refused to play the game.

C. He failed to return the ball.

7. What lesson has the author learned from his experiences? A. Never make the same mistake twice in your life. B. Always get fully prepared for an important event. C. Don’t depend on others for things you want to do. D. You’d better not trust your classmates and teachers.

The home of the future won’t look like the house in The Jetsons. It won’t be equipped with a flying car or a robot servant. While it will use clean-energy technologies that the cartoon’s creators couldn’t have imagined, it will be made largely from wood and used materials, like recycled cement and carpet.

“We can build net-zero buildings,” said Elizabeth Beardsley from the U.S. Green Building Council. In the 2017 UN Climate Change Conference, Beardsley pressed the case to make all buildings produce at least as much energy as they use by 2050.

Buildings cause pollution mainly in two ways. One is from power use. Residential (住宅的) and commercial buildings account for 70 percent of power consumed in the United States — electricity that largely comes from burning coal and natural gas. The second way is in the use of materials like steel and concrete.

To cut power use, Beardsley said that homeowners and building managers can choose LED lights, produce electricity from solar panels and use smart water heaters and air conditioners to store that clean energy. She described other technologies, like windows that automatically change colors when rooms get too warm, saving energy on air conditioning while keeping homes comfortable. “Lighting manufacturers have developed systems that use sensors (传感器) to know when you,re there and when you’re active.” Beardsley said, “These are also getting cheaper and cheaper.”

“For building products, there’s been a growing interest — still quite new — in the environmental influences of the products.” Beardsley said, “How long does it last? Is it going to be replaced soon?” She added, “Now there are

new products that will take in carbon.” Producers are looking to construct large buildings out of wood.

Even in wood buildings, designers use concrete and steel. Some scientists are working to reduce the carbon footprint of these basic materials. “All of the recycling efforts to date have led to new ideas and new products.” Beardsley said. Producers are also looking to use other materials from recycled goods, such as carpet from old plastic bottles. It may be that the homes of the future will be made from unwanted wood, metal, cardboard and plastic. 8. The house in The Jetsons is special because of the use of . A. clean energy

B. cheap labour D. recycled materials

C. high technology

9. What can we learn about net-zero buildings? A. They are built without any net. B. They don’t cause any pollution. C. The energy supplied is self-produced. D. A small amount of energy is consumed.

10. What are energy technologies like in the future according to Beardsley? A. They can adjust to people’s needs. B. They are developed from solar energy. C. They go with traditional building materials. D. They are mainly applied to commercial buildings.

11. What is the new concern about building products according to Beardsley? A. Their high price.

B. Their poor quality.

D. Their effects on environment. D

Free education and health care are surely among the reasons why Norway became the happiest country in the world according to the 2017 World Happiness Report, but researchers add one more reason to Norwegian’s good cheer - one single word.

The word is “dugnad” and it means “to do community work”. Before you rush out to help an elderly neighbor cross the street or walk dogs at your local shelter, you need to know that dugnad is not directly translated to traditional volunteerism, although the work of a dugnad is voluntary.

Deeply rooted in the country’s culture, dugnad is different from daily charitable work. It describes times when community members come together to contribute their skills toward the goal of making a certain place better. This

B. Their deals on the market.

could be through repairing, building, cleaning, gardening, or painting. Norwegian law doesn’t force people to attend dugnad events, but dugnad is regarded as an important part of neighborhoods, organizations and workplaces. It needs strength from many people. So everyone is expected to participate in the activity.

Dugnad is a part of the national spirit. It has a cultural root that supports Norwegian values of generosity and public care. Dugnad improves relationships and holds a nation together. If you’re encouraged to try it yourself and to bring the spirit of dugnad to your area, you need to remember the goal is to help keep the country happy. Instead of hosting a sale to buy new uniforms for a team, think of having a party to repair the old uniforms.

Don’t worry if you don’t own any painting supplies or aren’t sure how to garden. Not all of us are the outdoor spring-cleaning type, but you can still help by showing up to a charitable community event with water, coffee, or baked goods in hand. Public food plays a big role in the dugnad. A shared meal in the act of helping one another can bring us closer to neighbors, co-workers, or fellow parents at our child’s school.

(For more information, please click https: //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Communal_work#Dugnad.) 12. What is the final aim of dugnad? A. To make people rich B. To make the country strong. C. To make Norwegians cheerful. D. To make more children healthy.

13. Where can you possibly read this passage? A. In the newspaper. C. In the textbook.

B. On the travel brochure. D. On the Internet.

14. What are we expected to do when bringing the spirit of dugnad to our area? A. Hold more parties.

B. Do helpful and practical work. C. Raise as much money as possible. D. Learn to do what we’re not good at. 15. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. Dugnad needs all to join in. B. Dugnad makes a difference. C. Dugnad is not hard to carry out. D. Dugnad does good to our health.
