W: You are up early! I thought you’d sleep in (睡懒觉) after working so late last night. M: I thought about it, but the weather looks perfect for surfing.

W: Great! I’ll go with you to the beach! I’ll go jogging while you’re surfing. Text 2

M: Mum, is my lunch packed? It’s 7:20 now. The bus will come in ten minutes! I can’t be late for school again.

W: I’m almost done. Give me two minutes … There! Have a great day, dear. See you at four! Text 3

W: The traffic is so bad today! I hope we can get to work on time.

M: Maybe we should call the boss and let him know we’re going to be late.

W: That’s a good idea. I’m sure he’ll understand. Do you have our office phone number? Text 4

W: May I help you, sir?

M: Yes. I don’t want to eat anything these days. I don’t know why.

W: Please sit here and wait a moment. There is still a patient before you. Text 5

M: Why do you look so worried today?

W: You see, this is Jane’s first time she has ever been out without us. M: As parents, we have to realize that she has grown up already. W: I know, but I just can’t help worrying. Text 6

M: I have never taken the subway here before.

W: Well, we have a very good subway system. We can go almost anywhere in the city by subway. And we don’t have to worry about traffic jams. M: Sounds good. Is it in service every day? W: Yes. 7 days a week, about 18 hours a day.

M: Oh, the subway runs a little longer in my country: 20 hours starting from 4:00 in the early morning until midnight. Text 7

M: Today we had a lesson at school about cyber bullying (网络欺凌). W: Cyber bullying? What does it mean?

M: It means the act of doing or saying something bad about someone online. A recent study showed that about a quarter of teenagers today do it!

W: I can’t believe it. I’ve never been mean to anyone over the Internet and none of my friends have either.

M: Really? Haven’t you ever posted a bad photo of someone online, or “liked” a mean comment about someone?

W: Well, yes, of course. Everyone does that, but we’re only having fun. M: I don’t think so. You don’t know how this makes people feel. W: I suppose you’re right. I never thought about it that way. Text 8

W: Did you enjoy the meal at the restaurant last night, Tony?

M: It wasn’t as good as I had thought. You gave the place such a good review after you’d tried it out with Katie that I was expecting to go there.

W: Yes, I was a bit disappointed this time, too. My steak was really tough and they took that wonderful cheesecake off the menu for some reason.

M: I thought you were enjoying the steak. Anyway, the salad wasn’t bad. W: What do you think the others thought of it?

M: Well, I’ll find it out at work tomorrow. No one said much there. I guess no one wanted to spoil the celebration for Jack. Well, I’ll miss him. It’ll be strange in the office without him.

W: Sure. These people at the next table had an argument about the bill. At least we had no problems with that. Text 9

W: So Mr. Taylor, your books are all set in different countries, aren’t they?

M: Yes. Everything in my novels happens in countries I know. I was born in South Africa and I still live there. I began by writing a novel about a family living in Egypt. My most recent book was about Morocco. I spent several months there last year.

W: Your books are all adventure stories. Has anything really dangerous ever happened to you? M: Well, I’ve had a few experiences with wild animals! But the worst thing was definitely when I was driving along a desert and my car suddenly stopped and wouldn’t start again. Fortunately, I had plenty of water.

W: Sounds very frightening. What do you do in your spare time?

M: Well, I actually find it hard to relax. I’m pretty sociable, and I know lots of people, so I usually arrange to do something with them.

W: Great. Do you have any special plans for the future?

M: Well, I’ve traveled all over the world, and there aren’t many places I still want to visit. My main aim is to write the history of my local area. I’ve decided to stop writing novels because I want to do something different. Text 10

M: During my trip to England last year, I had the opportunity to visit Stonehenge. Almost every tourist who travels to England visits this ancient, mystical place.

I remember it was a very hot day in July with a lot of sunshine. We left our hotel quite early. When we arrived there, it was already nine. The Stonehenge was made of huge square stones, which weigh nearly five tons each, stand eighteen feet high, and are three feet thick. It was amazing to see them up close. Something that I really asked myself was how the ancient people could have been clever enough to arrange the stones and place them altogether to form a circle without using any modern technology. It was really strange.

One of the most exciting things about Stonehenge is the mystery surrounding it. As I walked around the stones, I noticed how isolated (孤零零的) they were; there was nothing else standing around them, no community or anything. Were they also isolated in ancient times? If so, why had the ancient people built them that way? Maybe only when I travel back in time can I find out the truth!
