When I was about twelve,I headed to a restaurant for dinner with my family. It was winter, and on that night, the wind was really blowing hard.As my mom and I headed to the restaurant from our car, a girl about my age and her mother
1
came up to us. They asked if we had any spare change (零钱). My mom right away asked where they lived. They pointed to an old car in a parking lot across the street. The girl said there were six of them living in that car.
My mom said she had something to do after handing the people a few dollars. She sent me inside the restaurant with my dad and my three siblings. But she didn't come. Later, I found out she had gone home and put all the food in our cupboards into a few bags. Then, she brought that food over to the car and handed the bags to the family.I wasn't there when that happened, but I can only imagine the joy it brought to those people.
A few days later , when I actually found out what she had done ,I asked her why she helped those people. She told me that they were not lucky. I remember the face of that girl who had asked us for change. She was the same age as me, yet we looked so different.
Here I stood, dressed in almost new clothes, headed to eat in a restaurant and then came back home to the bedroom I shared with my younger sister. I remember thinking that the other girl didn't have any food to eat and she was heading back to a cold car shared with five other people.
After painting this picture in my mind,I understood why my mom had done what she did. I will never forget what she did that night, and how she taught me one of the best lessons I have ever learned.

As the coronavirus (冠状病毒) outbreak continues, many Americans are fearful of using public transportation. They are also looking for ways to get exercise without going to a gym. So, it may not be surprising that the pandemic (疫情) has led to a major increase in bicycle sales.
In the US, bicycles at big stores have sold out. And small bicycle stores cannot keep up with demand for “family-style” bicycles: the low-cost, easy-to-ride models. “The bicycle industry is seeing its biggest sales increase since the oil crisis of the 1970s,” said Jay Townley, an industry expert. He compared the sale of bicycles to the rush to buy products like toilet paper at the start of the pandemic.
The rise in bicycle sales is not happening just in the US. Italy has created bicycle paths for the growing number of people who want to avoid public transportation. In London, city officials plan to ban cars from some central roads.
1
Bike shop owners in Manila say demand is even stronger than what they see at Christmas time.
Of course, you can only buy a bicycle if you can find one. In the US, the shortages now mean it may take many months to get a bicycle. High demand is not the only reason for the shortage. Many bicycle factories were shut down to stop the spread of COVID-19. The increase in bicycle demand began in March as countries began to close down. In April, the sale of bicycles increased 200 percent in the US.
Joe Minutolo is the co-owner of Bar Harbor Bicycle Shop in Maine. He said he hoped the increased sales meant a change in the way people think about transportation. “People are having a chance to rethink things,” he said, “Maybe we’ll all learn something out of this, and something really good will happen.”
28. The reason for the sharp increase of bicycle sales is ____. A. The outbreak of the coronavirus. B. People’s preference for doing exercise. C. The shortage of public transportation. D. The government’s ban on cars in the city.
29. What is the meaning of the underlined phrase “shut down” in paragraph 4 ? A. supported B. banned C. close D. openned 30. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Bicycles are in great demand in some countries because of the breakout of coronavirus.
B. Government banned the producing of bicycles to prevent the spread of the virus.
C. Public transportation will take the place of private cars in the future. D. The increased sales in bicycles will change the way people think about
1
transportation.
31. What is Joe Minutolo’s attitude towards the increased sales of bicycles. A. critical B. optimistic C. uncertain D. doubtful
D
As Internet users become more dependent on the Internet to store information, are people remember less? If you know your computer will save information, why store it in your own personal memory, your brain? Experts are wondering if the Internet is changing what we remember and how.
In a recent study, Professor Betsy Sparrow conducted some experiments. She and her research team wanted to know the Internet is changing memory. In the first experiment, they gave people 40 unimportant facts to type into a computer. The first group of people understood that the computer would save the information. The second group understood that the computer would not save it. Later, the second group remembered the information better. People in the first group knew they could find the information again, so they did not try to remember it.
In another experiment, the researchers gave people facts to remember, and told them where to find the information on the Internet. The information was in a specific computer folder (文件夹). Surprisingly, people later remember the folder location (位置) better than the facts. When people use the Internet, they do not remember the information. Rather, they remember how to find it. This is called “transactive memory (交互记忆)”
According to Sparrow, we are not becoming people with poor memories as a result of the Internet. Instead, computer users are developing stronger transactive memories; that is, people are learning how to organize huge quantities of information so that they are able to access it at a later date. This doesn’t mean we are becoming either more or less intelligent, but there is no doubt that the way we
1
use memory is changing.
32. The author starts the passage with two questions to ________. A. lead to the topic of the text B. show his writing purpose
C. tell us the problem the Internet brought us D. explain how to store information
33. Which of the following is true according to the second paragraph? A. People in the first group remember information better. B. The two groups remember the information equally well.
C. People in the two groups type the information into the computers themselves. D. The first group did not understand the information, so they didn’t remember it well.
34. Which of the following is true according to the study? A.People become less intelligent because of the computer. B. We have poorer memories than before. C. We have changed the way we use our memory. D. We need a better way to improve our memory. 35. How does the author develop the passage? A. By presenting figures. B. By giving examples.
C. By analyzing the results of experiments . D. By answering questions.

An 80-year-old man was sitting on the sofa in his house along with his 45-year-old highly educated son. Suddenly, a crow(乌鸦) rested on their window.
The father asked his son, “What’s this?” The son replied, “It is a crow.” After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What’s this?” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you, it is a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son the third time, “What’s this?”
At this time, some expression of anger was felt in his son’s tone when he said to his father with a firm reply. “It is a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What’s this?”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this?”
A little later the father went to his room and came back with an old diary, which he had kept since his son was born.
On opening a page, he asked his son to read the page.
When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary: “Today, my little son aged 3 was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was

sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel angry but I rather felt love for my innocent son.” 注意:

第二节 读后续写
After reading the diary, the son burst into tears, feeling sorry for what he had
done to his father. He lost his patience with his father when he was asked the same question for the fourth time. However, compared with him, his father was patient even though he asked even 23 times. By comparison, the son began to reflect on his own behavior, admitting his own mistake.
Feeling ashamed, the son got down to his knees before his father. He made an apology to his father, begging his father to forgive him. The father gave him a hug and all old memories came crowding in. It was his father that showed great concern about
1
him. Never would he forget the days when his father used to attend to him with great care and love. How lucky he was to be blessed with such a great father! He promised that he would take care of his father the way he was treated by his father.
