Step I Revision Check the homework.
Ask some students to make some sentences using reporting verbs.
Step II Before you start
After the revision, go on with Before you start on Page 8. Exercises in this part will help students prepare for listening.
T: What animal is in the logo of WWF? Ss: Panda.
T: Why was a panda chosen in your opinion?

S: Because the panda is becoming endangered. It calls people’s more attention to environmental protection.
T: Quite right! As we know, because of human activities many species are becoming endangered. In this class we are going to learn Endangered Species. Now please look at the following pictures and match the names with the pictures. (Show the pictures of some endangered animals on the PowerPoint.)
After dealing with Ex1, go on with Ex2.
T: Now let’s come to Ex2. Please take out your Oxford Advanced Learner’s English-Chinese Dictionary and look up the Key Words. Three minutes later I will ask some of you to explain them in English. …
T: Now let’s read the definitions together. (Show the definitions of the Key Words on the PowerPoint). Then complete the sentences in Ex2.
Ask four students to read the sentence individually and check the answers. Then the whole class read the sentences together.
Step III Listening Strategies: Taking lecture notes
The listening strategies will help students build listening skills and get thoroughly prepared. Before listening, ask students to read and discuss Listening Strategies on Page 8. From the listening strategies students will learn how to listen to lectures and take notes.
Step IV Listen to learn Deal with Ex3.
Before playing the recording, Teacher asks students to look back to the endangered animals in Ex1. According to the clues, students may make a prediction to the listening materials. Play again if necessary. Their notes may vary from others’. Deal with Ex4
Ask students to work in pairs and use their notes to make sentences in turns. Several minutes later ask some pairs to read aloud their sentences. Deal with Ex5
Ask students to compare their notes with other group members. Have several students tell the class the most important information that they got from the lecture. Deal with Ex6
Play the recording again and ask students to complete the fact files. Ask students to compare their fact files with their group members. Show the fact files on the PowerPoint.

Deal with Ex7
Play the recording for students to listen to the dialogue and complete the Function File with the expressions to justify arguments.
First ask students to read the expressions to justify arguments. (Show the expressions on the PowerPoint.) Then tell students justifying arguments will persuade the other that the law requires or permits the decision is made in your favour. Play the recording again if necessary. After checking the answers have students to read the sentences together.
Step V Language Power
Ask students to complete the justifications in Ex2 on Page 54. Students should do the exercises individually. Then ask students to compare their answers with others. After checking the answers with the whole class, let individual students read the sentences aloud.
Step VI Homework
1. Finish Ex8 on Page 9 and try to recite the passage. 2. Do Ex 1-3 in Remember on Page 55.
