’s get down to our business. First, look at the picture on the right. What can you see
in this picture? Yeah. We can see a bunch of flowers. In addition, we can see that a young man is presenting the roses as a gift to a woman and the woman is ready to accept it.

each other equally. E is the initial letter of “Excuse”indicating , that in order to achieve harmonious relationship, a sense of forgiveness should be developed between lovers. As I mentioned above a single letter love contain abundant philosophical ideas about love and we do
come to realize it is fairly difficult to accomplish love. However after learning this article we may have a deep insight in maintaining love.
Slide 9: The article is a touching love story between a young woman named Rose and her husband. The love each other and care about each other affectionately. Their great love lasts forever.
Slide 10: After we have grasped the general idea of this article, letwill learn: first, The origin of “St. ValentineAmerican Culture .
Slide 11: Here, we take a look at St. Valentine
falls on February 14th annually. In Chinese we translated as
’s Day. It
’s a traditional festival for lovers, which
’s turn to the text.
In order to understand the article completely, it is advisable to learn some notes. For this part, we
’Days ”. Secondly The functions of Flowers in
圣瓦伦西节”“,like Chinese 七夕”“.
On this day, men usually buy roses for their sweetheart, expressing his deep love, in return for this, women often present chocolates with a shape heart to show appreciation.Amusingly, there is also a story concerning Valentine
’s Day.
In ancient Rome, there was a king called Claudius, he was a terrible King, and he started many wars. One day, he asked all the young men in Rome to join the army and fight for him, so many young men in Rome had to leave their girlfriends and wives, and they were so sad that they couldn’t fight anymore. Slide 12: The giving of flowers on special occasions is very important in American culture. These flowers are usually given by the male to the female, especially to sweethearts on St. ValentineDay, to bride on Wedding Ceremony, or to mothers on Mothercare and gratefulness.
Slide 13: Since we have known some cultural note related to the article, we are ready to learn it in detail. Now let
’s analyze some difficult sentences. First, in paragraph 2 we got this sentence:
ch passing year.
” This sentence appears on the note attached
“You” refers to her wife
“Passing year
’s love for his sweetheart.
love for you will always grow with eato the roses for Rose. It shows a man
’s Day. They are symbols of love,
’s
with each passing year is a prepositional phrase to show accompaniment. ” m
the year passing by. Passing is a present participle functions as a pre-modifier. We have more examples like: waiting car(等待的汽车); sleeping dog(熟睡的小狗); missing girl(失踪的女孩).
We can paraphrase the sentence like this:and deeper
”
” As time goes by,my love for you will become deeper
Slide 14 In paragraph 4, we see this sentence” She trimmed the stems, and inserted them symbolically in a very Special vase.hair” or “trim the Christmas Tree
” Trim means
“to decorate; ornament
”, we know
” etc. Insert means put sth into sth
“”to for example we can insert
“trim
a key into the key slot or we may insert a word in the sentence. “symbolicallyis a ” adverb, showing the manner and meaning “in a solemn way” The special vase is a symbol of her husband’s love. We can paraphrase the sentence like this:She decorated the flowers and put them in a vase which means special to her.
Slide 15 We have tackled some difficult sentences and paved way for learning of paragraphs.
Now let’take s a short paragraphs quoted from the article. Thisparagraph describes Rose’s astonishment when she saw the unexpected rose delivered by the florist. You see there are some blanks in the passage. So you are required to fill in the blanks with proper words in the box.As we all know, in CET-4, we have to select 10 words from 15 words to fill in the blank. Now we are doing the similar practice. The first sentence needs a predicate verb so we choose between the two words
“brought” “discover
” and “explain
”. After further analysis we know
appropriate in meaning. So we choose brought. The second blank is easy, because we need a noun to form a prepositional phrase “in +noun”Consequently, . astonishment is suitable here. In the same way, it is comparatively to figure out the answers to the other bexplain; unexpectedly and intense
”
lanks. They are
“delivered;
“brough
Slide 16 Next we take a review of the grammatical points in this article. Generally speaking, we are focusing on model verbs plus present perfect tense, take “must have done” for example to indicate you are sure that someone did something in the past. Usually there are some evidence closely associated with the judgment. Slide 17 Similar expressions can be found like:
” Should have done
”; “Could have done
”;
have done” 1)Should have done indicates someone should do sth in the past, but actually we did do it”(本应该做而未做); For example we should not have made such silly mistakes. 2)Could have done means“someone were able to do sth but we didn’do t it ”(而实际上并未做); For example He could have gone to a key university without his fatherhave finished his homework.Slide 18 Next slide, letwe have mentioned above like“Might have done
’s do some practice. You are expected to fill in the blanks with the words
” Must have done
”; “Should have done
”; “Could have done
”. The first one is easy, since we can get a clue from the preposition
’s objection. 3)Might have done
shows“some did sth in the past but you are not sure about it.委婉的推测) For example, he might ”(
”
“
indicates reason. That is to say, the speaker is very certain about his judgment. Therefore we choose must have done. The second one, Tom is said to be very lazy. He should finish the work yesterday, but he did not. So we choose
“should have done
” .The third one means he was able to
pass the exam, but due to carelessness, he failed. So could have done is proper here. The fourth one indicates the possibility of giving help. But the speaker is not very sure, so might have done
could be used here. After the practice we must have a better understanding of the text.
Slide 19-20 During the past 20 minutes, we analyze the article in detail. Now let’do s some translation practice. You know translation; especially Chinese-English translation is much more difficult in CET-4 examination. We should do more practice and improve our skills of translation. When we are doing the first one, pay attention to the translation of “一束花”, which can be translated as ‘s translation is completion of the action And there is also a set phrase translated into translation.
Slide 21 Here we can generalize the tips of translation: 1. understand the original sentence and don’neglect t even a small part of the translation. 2. pay special attention to the voice, tense, gender, number and spelling. Make you can meet the basic standards.3. After translation, you have to check it out whether there are any mistakes. Read it out to yourself and use your language sense to proofread it. That
’s some general principles of translation. You all should bear them in mind and
apply them to practical translation. I hope these tips will be useful.
Slide 22 finally we came to the most important part of this lecture. I mean we will learn how to write a formal invitation in English. First we see a sample, and you got a rough idea, then the special format of invitation will be introduced. Later, I will suggest some basic patterns. In the end you are required to write an invitation by yourself.
“to cheer sb up
“a bunch of flowers提前””, which can be translated as and “
“St. Valentine
“in advance情人节” ”. “
’s Day”. During translation, we should ensure the correct spelling
and capitalization of each word. In addition we should use present perfect tense indicating the
“order”. Next sentence contains a conditional clause which ledby “if”.
“you’d better
” to show suggestion.
“to make others happy
”. If you pay attention to these three key points, you will do well in
Slide 23 Now let’s see a sample to find out what an invitation consists of? On the top, “
1999” shows the time of writing. Right under the time, there is salutation to show politeness. At the beginning, we should state clearly and specifically about time and place of the event, which are the most important information. If time and place are not appropriate, people invited possible will not accept it. Next, you may write about the content of the invitation. It may not be one item, but you should put the most important one in the front. In the end, we can see complimentary closing
“Cordially yours
” and signature
“Kitty
”.
Slide 24 After we get to know a sample, we can summarize the format of a formal invitation: First, Secondly, Salutation e.g. Dear Mr. Green and Mrs Green Thirdly, Body of the invitation. In this part we should state clearly about time, place, event, requirements. Fourthly, .Complimentary closing and Signature are indispensable. So don
’t forget about it .
Slide 25 While we are writing an invitation, we should not only conform with the format but select some frequently used sentences to show familiarity and courtesy. Here are some sentences which might be useful in your writing.
State clearly the one you wanted to invite like 1. I
’d like ... to come to dinner. And 2. request the
pleasure of … 3. May I have the honor of your company at dinner? If you ask a reply you can
’re not too busy to come.
write like this :4. The favor of a reply is requested. 5. I hope you
Slide 27 Next you are expected to write an invitation by yourself, following the format we have introduced. Remember what you have written should in accordance with the requirements in Chinese . You may write it like this: If you have no other plans for Sunday, April 4th, would you like to come to my birthday party? The party is in my home at 7 p.m. Kate and Tom are also joining us. And I shall be very pleased if you could manage to come, too.
Slide 28 After the introduction of practical writing, we are closing our lecture by a summary and a movie recommendation: To sum up, today we know the meaning of love and what gifts stand for love. Then, we get a brief introduction of the general idea of the article. We know it is about a true love between a woman named Rose and her husband. Moreover, we review the grammatical point of “mode verbs + present participle
” Finally we have learned how to write an invitation.
Slide 29 For Movie Recommendation. I suggest a classic movie called Titanic, which illustrate an amazing love between a young man Jack and a young woman Los.Slide 30 Don
’t forget to do your homework as you can see on the screen.
Thank you very much for your attention. See you next time. Goodbye!
