IV. 閱讀測驗 (共10分)
While husbands bought presents and flowers to show their affection for their wives, King Shan Jahan did something different. Located in the city of Agra in the northern Idian state of Uttar Pradesh, the Taj Mahal was built as a lasting building which represented forever love. King Shah Jahan came into power in 1628 after a battle to claim the throne. Shah Jahan was a powerful leader; yet, his heart belonged only to his wife. Through 19 years of marriage, his loving companion, Mumtaz Mahal, stood by his side. Mumtaz died while giving birth to their 14th child at the age of 39.
While she was dying, Mumtaz asked her husband to build Taj as a way to memorize her. After a period of mourning, the king started to build the Taj Mahal. The great building took 22 years to complete, employing about 20,000 workers. Constructed of marble stone, the structure sits on a place in the Yamuna River. This location allowed Shah Jahan to gaze from his personal palace to the final resting place of his beloved wife.
