Listening Test
I. Complete the following dialogue 15% @ 1%
Directions: You are going to hear a short dialogue. Fill in the missing word or words as you listen to the dialogue. You will hear the dialogue only once. Helen: So you’re flying to Cork, right? Isobel: Yeah, right. We arrive there Monday evening and we already have (1) a hotel booked for Monday night. Then we pick up our hire car on Tuesday morning. Helen: Well, Cork itself is worth looking around – there’s a nice cathedral there, but personally I (2) wouldn’t stay there too long if I were you. I’d (3) head straight for the lakes for the second night – it’s a beautiful drive through the mountains and you can (4) stop at Blarney Castle, and you know, kiss the Blarney Stone. Bob: Kiss the Blarney Stone! Helen: Yes, it’s a tradition, didn’t you know? If you kiss the Blarney Stone, you get the Irish (5) gift of eloquence. You know we’re very famous for our eloquence and our (6) ability to talk. So, that’s what you have to do. Bob: Right, we won’t forget. We’ll definitely kiss the Blarney Stone! Isobel: And can we stay there – at Blarney Castle? Helen: Well, there’s not really much there. I’d recommend that you go on to Killarney - it’s (7) right in the middle of the Lakes, one of the most beautiful areas of Ireland. You could spend two or three nights (8) there easily, just driving round. There’s so much beautiful scenery to see – the lakes and the mountains. You’ll love it! Isobel: Right... Killarney ... that’s here ... and do you recommend anywhere special to visit while (9) we’re there? Helen: Well, you’ve got to see the Ring of Kerry – it’s the most (10) spectacular coastline in the whole of Ireland, I would say. You just drive along the coast road through places like Killorglin – that’s lovely – and Dingle Bay, and Kenmare … there’s lots of (11) beautiful spots where you can stop. Isobel: So, how long do you think that would take? Helen: Oh, you (12) could do it in a day. It’s about a hundred miles altogether, I should think. Bob: And is there anywhere else to visit while we’re in Killarney? Helen: There are so many places – it’s hard to say. You can just (13) drive round and stop wherever you like. You’ll find the people terribly friendly in all those little places – and they love Americans, Bob! Bob: Sounds great! So where do you think we should head after that, Helen? Helen: Well, you should see Limerick, for sure – it’s something like the (14) fourth biggest city in Ireland, and it’s really lovely. It’s on the River Shannon, and there’s a very nice cathedral. I can’t remember the name … and King John’s Castle ... it’s really one of the (15) prettiest cities in Ireland. Isobel: So how long do you think we should stay there? Helen: I don’t know … one night’s probably enough.
