A good beginning is half done. Although the use of the expression is often an insincere, meaningless social custom, there is nothing wrong with it except that it?s a little uninteresting. Passenger pigeons (旅鸽) once lived in the U.S. in large numbers. Written records from the 18th and 19th centuries described their groups so large that they darken the sky for hours. When it population reached its highest point, they were more than 3 billion—a number equal to 24 to 40 percent of the total bird population in the U.S., making it perhaps the most abundant (大量) bird in the world. Around 1870, one group of them believed to be 320 miles long was seen near Cincinnati.
Sadly the abundance of passenger pigeons may have been their undoing. Where the birds were in large numbers, people killed them by the thousand. Hunters attracted them with grain(谷物), waited until pigeons had settled to feed, then threw large nets over them, taking hundreds at a time. The birds were shipped to large cities and sold in restaurants.
By the end of the 19th century, the forests where passenger pigeons nested had been damaged by American?s need for wood, so the birds had to go farther north, where cold temperatures and storms further led to their decline(衰败). Soon the great groups were gone, never to be seen again.
In 1897, the state of Michigan passed a law to stop the killing of passenger pigeons but by then, no great groups of them had been seen in the state for 10 years. The last wild passenger pigeon seen in the United States was shot by a boy in Ohio, in 1900. For a time, a few birds survived under human care. The last of them, known lovingly as Martha, died at the Cincinnati Zoo on September 1, 1914.
58. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, passenger pigeons____.

Not long ago, I met a young woman when drinking in a bar. I asked: “Where are you from?” She said: “I?m American.” I went on to ask: “Which state?” She answered: “Columbia--the country!” My new Colombian friend was annoyed that I steal the word “American” to call my country---the United States. How unfair and self-centered! She pointed out that she, too, was American.
Americans have been attacked on this point for many years. “Calling the U.S. America is often challenged, especially in Latin America,” American journalist H.L. Mencken wrote in 1947. Today, the argument continues not just in bars but on the Internet. A Facebook group with 1,800 members holds that America is a continent, not a country. Wikipedia editors have argued over it. On urbandictionary.com, the top definition(定义) for “America” is: “A country that claims(索取) the name of an entire continent to itself for no convincing reason.”
It?s true that “America” is a confusing word. But we?re not going to stop using it. Certainly, calling the U.S. “America” somewhat reflects the U.S.?s world power. But John Adams used “America” to mean the “U.S.” in his first inaugural address(就职演讲), well before the nation became a world power. The truth is that Americans using “America” is not imperialist(帝国主义). It?s just convenient, and harms no one. True, it shows that Americans don?t often think of the entire American continent the way they think of Europe. That?s not because they look down on Latin America, though. It?s because Chile has never invaded(侵略) Greenland and Canada hasn?t bombed Argentina. The idea of “America” as a continent doesn?t have many practical uses in our daily life except for soccer tournaments (锦标赛).
Meanwhile, the word “U.S.” is spiritless. It reduces the country to its political arrangement. It?s like a Brazilian saying, “Hello, I?m from the Republic(共和国).” Of what? Where? The “America” grounds the “United States” to the specific, real world.
I know the situation isn?t ideal. But Americans have been calling their country “America” for more than two centuries. They will and should continue. Deal with it. 62. The young woman in the bar felt annoyed because______. A. the author didn?t speak her language B. the author stole her belongings
