The 2018 Spring Festival Gala, or Chunwan in Chinese, was watched by millions of Chinese worldwide, as families and friends got together to bid farewell to the old, and ushered in the Lunar New Year – the Year of the Dog.

Along with the usual singing and dancing, traditional instrumental music, Chinese operas, comedies and martial arts, traditional culture has been the focus of this year’s Gala.

This year’s gala was staged at five different venues. Besides the main venue in Beijing, the cities of Qufu and Tai’an in East China’s Shandong Province were among the four sub-venues, due to their significant role in the development of Chinese civilization.

Qufu is the hometown of Confucius, China’s most renowned philosopher, but he is also famous worldwide – even more so today thanks to Chinese culture’s growing popularity across the globe. In recent years, Confucius Institutes have opened in quite a number of countries and regions, enabling those who are interested in China to learn more about the country.

The main venue at the old CCTV building’s studio in Beijing featured the design of the Chinese character “Zhong” – which is also the first character of “Zhongguo,” the name of the country. The symmetrical (对称) structure of the character contains profound connotations (内涵), and is a symbol that could represent the nation.

Chinese cultural TV shows such as “National Treasure” and “The Chinese Poetry Competition,” were both parts of the variety shows in 2017 and have found their places in this year’s Gala as well.

There was also a cross-talk featuring ancient Chinese poetry, which was inspired by the poetry-themed TV show that was aired during last year’s Spring Festival. In recent years, the revival of traditional culture

has become increasingly popular in China.

D. Because they are important to Chinese civilization. 27. Which of the following is NOT true?

A. There were altogether five different venues in this year’s gala.

B. Many foreigners could learn more about China from Confucius Institutes.

C. An increasing number of Chinese are fond of traditional culture in recent years. D. We couldn’t watch Chinese cultural TV shows in this year’s Gala.

When Su Quanke looks out over the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, he does not see only steel pillars, asphalt (沥青) and cables, but a long dragon-a symbol of China’s engineering prowess.

As the project’s chief engineer, Su is familiar with every inch of the vast crossing. “As a cross-sea bridge, the 55-km structure is the longest of its kind in the world and is built with 420,000 metric tons of

steel, enough to build 60 Eiffel Towers,” he said. “The HZM Bridge is a marvel of modern engineering, one that is designed to last for 120 years-longer than any other bridge on the Chinese land,” he added. It also may be the most difficult bridge to build. “Construction of the gigantic project has overcome a series of

world-class technical problems, including the rapid building of artificial islands and connections using underwater tunnels,” Su said.

The bridge has been built above Lingdingyang at the Pearl River Estuary, which has complicated geological and hydrodynamic conditions. It has to be able to resist super typhoons every year. The tunnel section also has had to cross one of the busiest deep-water passages, the Lingding West Channel, as well as waters that are home to Chinese white dolphins, which are under the State’s strict protection.

The bridge is also environmentally friendly, with special filter screens installed in every drain to prevent rubbish and oil leaked from vehicles from being directly discharged into the sea. The number of Chinese white dolphins has risen over recent years to more than 1,800 from 1,400 when construction of the bridge began in 2009.

The Y-shaped bridge, which will take more than 105 billion yuan to build, is expected to start carrying traffic in early 2018 and will cut the land travel time between Hong Kong and Zhuhai by 2 hours and a half to just 30 minutes. It is part of the country’s planned national highway network, connecting the western and eastern parts of Pearl River and further integrating (结合) the cities in the Pearl River Delta.

The bridge was lit up on Dec 31, 2017. A lighting ceremony was held on Sunday to mark the completion of the majority of the work, indicating it is ready to go into service.

28. What can we infer about the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge according to paragraph 2? A. It is the longest bridge in the world.

B. The steel used for the bridge is not equal to build 60 Eiffel Towers.

C. It can last longest among the bridges in China.

D. It is impossible to build the artificial islands in a short time. 29. How can the construction of the bridge protect the environment?

A. Construction of the project has overcome a series of world-class technical problems. B. Special filter screens are installed in every drain to prevent the leak of rubbish and oil. C. The bridge has been built above Lingdingyang at the Pearl River Estuary. D. Hongkong, Zhuhai and Macao have cooperated to build the bridge.

30. How long did it take to travel between Hong Kong and Zhuhai on land before the bridge is built? A. 2 hours. B. 2 hours and a half. C. 3 hours. D. 30 minutes. 31. We may learn from the text that the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge . A. can represent the power of China’s engineering B. is unable to resist super typhoons C. has done great harm to Chinese white dolphins D. went into service on Dec 31, 2017

I’m an old person in a young person’s body. Change exhausts me. I like routine. The simple motions of a school day were always calming to me—the same classes, the same people, the same hours spent in a predictable pattern.

When my plans change suddenly, it feels like gears grinding in my brain. Instead of rolling along with my routine, everything in my head seems to jam while I erase everything I had planned for the day and replace it with my new plans. It doesn’t matter if the new plan is better than the old—having to quickly rebuild my mental schedule almost physically hurts. My brother once made a last-minute decision to visit our parents (who live five hours away) and gave me an hour’s notice to decide if I wanted to go with him, and I burst into tears. I eventually gave in, which led to a very nice weekend. I like my family, but I need a couple of days to psych myself up (做好精神准备) for such a big change.

I know no matter how hard I try, I can’t prevent things from changing. The school year ends, people move, friendships fade. But I get so attached to the familiar that even positive changes have been difficult for me to accept, so I’d have to mourn the end of an old era and adjust to something new. One concept that really jumps out at me is the idea of impermanence. It’s basically like that saying “this too shall pass.”

If I want to become comfortable with change, I have to learn to live in the moment. I have to accept that life is good right now, but that it is not permanent. When you learn to accept ahead of time that an end will come, the end is less painful.

Now, I still cling to routine. But these days I’m better at rolling with change. When my best friend left to spend her last semester on an out-of-state internship, while I mourned the end of our life together, I also found myself kind of excited about the new experience of living alone. It turns out it’s kind of lonely. But this too shall pass.

32. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 1 imply? A. The author looks younger than her actual age. B. The author looks older than her actual age.

C. Young as the author is, she pretends to be an old person. D. Young as the author is, she behaves like an old person.

33. Why did the author mention her brother’s example in paragraph 2? A. Because she wanted to tell us that she doesn’t like her family.

B. Because she wanted to stress that the sudden change will hurt her a lot. C. Because she wanted to show us the importance of changing the schedule.

D. Because she wanted us to know it’s not necessary to make a sudden change. 34. In order to adapt herself to the change, the author . A. has changed her routine B. has tried to seize today C. has given up all her plans D. has admitted things are permanent 35. What may be the best title for the text? A. Change exhausts me. B. Change is unnecessary. C. Everything shall pass. D. Everything is permanent.
